Tax-Related Identity Theft
The IRS reported 242,000 cases of tax-related identity theft in 2017. The IRS defines tax-related identity theft as a situation where someone uses a stolen social security number or individual taxpayer identification number to file a fraudulent tax return claiming a refund. The IRS offers the following tips for taxpayers and tax professionals.

Always use security software with firewall and antivirus protections. Make sure security software is turned on and can automatically update. Encrypt sensitive files such as tax records stored on the computer. Use strong passwords.
