All right, here we go video three. And I know in the last video I said we were going to talk about goals. But we're not. We've got one more video to cover before we talk about goals. And I did tell you in the last video, we were going to revisit Timothy gobo. So one of his other concepts from that 1974 book, the inner game of tennis, is this concept of distortion.

And so this is something that we really need to go through before we dive into your goals. So there are four layers to the pattern of distortion. And so it begins with distorted perception. And then the second level is distorted actions. And then we have distorted results. And the final layer is distorted self esteem.

All right, and so we'll go through these one at a time we're going to talk about how this manifests in our life and in our goals. But the distorted perceptions is very much related to what we talked about in the last video. It's the I saw trap. It is competing with comparing or copying others. Remember, this was written in 1974. So in 1974, how much of somebody else's life could you really see?

If they were your friends or your neighbors you saw part of their life, if they were a famous person, a celebrity, musician, sports star, you saw what? Two magazines and three television stations presented, right? In 2019. We can, we think, see much more into other people's lives. But again, most of that is curated very carefully. through social media.

We only show what we want other people to see About us, we have to remember that we only see about others what they want us to see. And so this is the distorted perceptions. Anytime we have an incomplete view if we are to set a course of action or create a plan based on an incomplete information we're creating a plan that is destined to fail. Think about this from a military or law enforcement strategy perspective. If we were going to go plan a mission, and we have incomplete information, do we really expect the mission to go according to plan? No, we know it's not.

Same thing in business. If you create a business plan based on distorted perceptions. It's not going to work. You're going to have distorted actions because your actions are based Knowing your perception, right? If the perception is wrong, even if you nail the actions, it's not going to be covering what needs to be covered. And then you're going to wind up with distorted results.

And that leads to retire our identities up into our results. So now our self esteem takes a hit because we failed in business, or we didn't make as much money as that person, or we thought it worked for them. But maybe it didn't. Right. It just made it look like it did. We had a distorted perception, the eye salt trap, we're copying, competing or comparing, we get a distorted result.

Maybe we got the right result, we just it's distorted because we didn't know what we were supposed to be doing distorted perception, distorted accident, distorted results. And now our self esteem takes a hit. vicious cycle. When we're looking outward. We're looking into other people's lives. We're competing, we're comparing we're comparing we're copying.

We're planning our actions and judging our results based on distorted perceptions incomplete information, I'll give you an example that I always use in the workshops. You know, I used to own a gentleman. And when I started my gym, there was a very famous individual who popularized the warehouse style performance training facility. And everybody who was getting into strength coaching wanted to have what this guy had. And many people built their business model around what they saw him doing in videos. But from a business model perspective, just seeing how people run or seeing the training videos that people post doesn't tell you how they run the business.

It doesn't tell you the financials, it doesn't tell you how they set up the logistics of people coming in and moving through. There are so many pieces of information missing from that. distorted perception that ain't complete picture. So when people created gyms to try to copy what this person was doing, they failed. What they also didn't know was that that person's business model didn't make money. I know for a fact, years down the road, that this guy wasn't making money doing what he was doing.

It was kind of a show it was a house of cards. And so think about how many people set toxic goals around copying or comparing to or even thinking that they could compete with this person, because they saw that, right. And so when these individuals then created a business, and they got distorted results, they tied their identity up in it, they get distorted self esteem. They think they're failures, all because they copied a broken model, because they didn't have the complete picture of it. Right. And so this is another caution.

Going back to the previous video to me Make sure that your goals are your goals, not somebody else's, that you're not competing copying or comparing to others that you're not falling into the salt trap. Now, regardless of our goals, even if we avoid toxic goals, we all have distortions. Okay? And so our exercise now, at the end of this video, you're going to go to this page that says, How am I distorted? And I want you to think through maybe times in your life, or even right now, what distorted perceptions do you have? Or in the past, what distorted perceptions have led to particular actions that lead to results that were distorted?

And how did they impact your self esteem? Right? It's very important that as we investigate, you know, these distortions in our past successes or failures, that we don't tie our identities up in those outcomes right, go back to what we talked about. The last video this is about the process and focusing on the actions, focusing on the process, removing who we are and our identity from what we do and what we produce, right. So, videos over, you've got homework, and next video video four, we're going to start talking about your specific goals.
