DESCRIPTION: Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is a frequently used reducing agent which can be used to selectively reduce aldehyde and ketone functionalities, an example of which is shown in figure 1. One issue with this reaction, however, is that sodium borohydride is a disposable chemical and waste is generated. Green chemistry has been revolutionising the synthetic world of organic chemistry by designing alternative techniques, such as the Pd-catalysed reduction in figure 2, that reduces or eliminates the use and generation of hazardous substances for sustainable chemistry, although this often negatively impacts reaction yield.
