Inspiration, flashes of brilliance. If you're watching movies or reading books about wildly successful people, it's very dramatic to talk about these magical moments. But the reality is quite often much more mundane. So many successful people and productive people are productive, simply because they have daily habits that push them in that direction. You look at so many wildly successful bestselling authors. And they tell you, they don't worry about writer's block because they're in their seat in front of their typewriter or computer at a set time each day, whether it's 8am or 9am.
They don't get up some of them they'll get up to go to the bathroom until they've written the first page or to the first thousand words. It is a discipline a daily habit. Now I apologize for using this overworked example but it is A great example and you see it in almost any other productivity course and book on productivity. It's the example of the famous comedian Jerry Seinfeld, most successful sitcom of all time, he's made more than a billion dollars from it. And he talks about early on in his career, he simply made a pledge to himself. He had a big wall calendar, and he would scratch off a day.
Each day on the calendar for every day he wrote a joke. And the object was to fill up every page every week, every month, except off to show that he had written a joke so after a while, it just became a great game where he didn't want to break the chain. And after a while, it simply became a habit. Right? A joke everyday. How does a comedian get to be a good comedian?
Writing new jokes every single day, so seven days a week. 365 days a year is a pretty good habit to have. I think if you want to be a world class comedian that doesn't guarantee you're gonna have a sitcom that makes you billions, but it obviously helped him It helped him hone comedic talents. It helped him hone, writing talents. So that's my question to you what are your daily habits that will help you advance in your career and in life the most if you want to be a professional comedian like Jerry Seinfeld, obviously, writing one good joke a day helps. I am a trainer and a speaker.
So I speak every day. Now sometimes it's just to a camera. And I have to reach you later on your schedule when you watch me. But I make videos virtually every day or at least write material that will be used for online courses or for YouTube videos every single day, now if it's a weekend or a holiday, I may just dictate one sentence of a topic that I'll use, or one sentence of a thought for a course that will later be turned into a video. But the point is, I'm thinking about new content. For courses and my areas of expertise.
I'm creating new content every single day, doesn't mean I'd ever have a downtime or vacation day, but at least some bit of mental energy is there, and some act of creation. Now I could be on a beach Devin shade for five days, but I can still dictate the 30 seconds and turn that dictation into text that I will then use as raw material for a course I make two weeks later. It's still an act of creation. And that's is an important part of my daily habit. If you want to be a marathoner, you probably want to spend at least some time, every day running, you can't just decide a month before a marathon, I'm going to win the Olympics and pick up running, it just hasn't work that way. So I want you to really think about the people you see in your field, or the people you admire the most.
And then try to figure out what are they doing as a daily habit? And if you don't know, maybe ask some of them and try to figure it out. So I have two questions for you. Number one, what is the most important daily habit you do now that you think really sets you apart? I mean, I want you to brush your teeth, obviously, but don't put them brush your teeth because that's kind of a basic thing you should do. It's only an issue if you don't do it.
I want to know what is the one habit That you do right now that you think helps you the most. Number two, what is the one habit you would like to build that you're currently not doing that you think would advance your career the most if you want to be a novelist, the next Stephen King, then obviously, that habit might be something like write one full page or write 750 words every single day, before lunch or before breakfast before you go to sleep. Whatever it is, I want you to write it down in the q&a section now
