Hi, and welcome to creating a safety culture with me Steven Mathur. Less than one, why do you want to change your team culture? What is a team culture? And why should you care about it? One way of describing a team culture is the way it's done around here. It's a set of behavioral and social norms, the way that people expect each other, to behave, to act, to react and to interact.

Another way of thinking about it is it's the sum of lots of individual bits of behavior. add them all together, and you have yourself a culture importantly for our course, influence says what your team and individuals in your team do. Remember, people will already bring with them certain beliefs, values, ways of thinking, etc. And they'll bring that with them to work. They get these from their parents, their friends, what they watch on television, in other parts of the media, what they see on the internet, books, magazines, and they also have an elements of genetics. So it'll have traits and tendencies that they're born with.

But at work, another factor of behavior is the way that they'll be influenced directly by other people within their team and those around them. And what you're trying to do is leverage this. On these culture change programs. I talked about three steps to culture change, and those are Firstly, identify The culture you need and why. then identify the behavior that will create the culture you need. And finally, identify what you need to do in order to influence that behavior.

So let's start with the first step. What culture Do you need and why? Well, clearly you've come on this course because you want a culture of safety. But why? Well, in order to obviously avoid accidents, maybe to reduce lost time incidents, to reduce the risk of litigation, to be seen as a caring team, or organization, become a more attractive place to work. So these are all good reasons why you might want a culture of safety or a safety culture.

So I'd like you to do a little exercise. Download the exercise sheet and jot down the answers to Why do you want to change your team culture around safety? So why do you want to do this culture change thing? What's happened recently that's prompted you to want to change the culture. What are the benefits to you and your team? So pause this video here and have a think about those questions, jot them down
