Hello. So this thing on what's the best way to speak into a microphone when you're doing a media interview or creating videos yourself? Well, you don't ever want to hit a mic. I'm not actually using this. I'm not doing any damage. You don't want to hit a microphone, you don't want to blow and I remember in junior high school, my principal every day.
That was his way of starting, he was blowing into the microphone, horrible for it. So don't tap it, don't blow it. Another big problem people have is their gesturing and they're going like this. So their volume is going in and out and constantly changing. If you are holding a microphone, for any sort of media interview you do, whether you're interviewing someone if it's your own show, or you're given a microphone, you don't want to move your hand too much that's holding the microphone. Now, every microphone can be a little distant, a little different.
The rule of thumb though, is have about this much distance between your thumb and your pinky. Sometimes it's a little closer like a fist, you don't want to be touching it, because then the popping sounds can come out. If it's too far away, you'll sound distant and actually 10 away 20. So, try to keep a safe distance either fist, or about this far apart, six, seven inches away, and you can't go wrong. Don't move your microphone, any more than necessary. Now, you've seen stand up comedians, and they're telling a joke, and to really dramatize something, they'll whisper and then they'll get really close like that.
For dramatic effect. If they're going to yell, they may pull it away. If you're going to be doing a talk radio show or a podcast. You may have to think about techniques like that, but most of the time if you're giving straightforward information If you're being interviewed, you don't have to worry about any of that. You just want the microphone at a steady distance. Now, what I'm using right here, what I recommend when people are doing their own videos, is have what's called an lav mic.
This is just pinned right on to my shirt here. That way, I don't have to hold it. I don't freeze my ability to gesture and it makes it easy, simpler and clearer.
