So this concludes this crisis communication scores for oil and gas executives. I hope you've learned some things that will help you prepare before a crisis hits you. Now, if you never ever have a crisis, you'll still sleep easier at night. Do not Do not Do what a lot of organizations do, which is forget about it until the crisis hits and then when the crisis hits, do everything wrong, and just clam up because your lawyer said you can't talk. Meanwhile, your reputation is destroyed. You know, that is not the thing to do.
All the advice I'm giving you will also keep you out of legal trouble, too. I'm not suggesting you say anything that your lawyers would be uncomfortable with. But I am suggesting you have a clear cut communication strategy. Follow the basics. You've got to react quickly. Something happens you have to have your spokesperson in place.
You have to brainstorm and every possible message all the facts and boil it down. To a simple, easy to understand three part message that you can deliver in 30 seconds about where did this oil explosion happen? Where did this leak happen? What happened that you know, you're going to stick to the facts. You're going to answer questions in a focused way where you're constantly bridging back to the facts as you know them. And finally, you're going to package your messages with sound bytes, so that you know in advance what quotes will be used, and you're not going to end up accidentally being quoted saying, I want my life back.
