Here's a trick, I guarantee you will generate more coverage for you and better coverage. But you've got to really have a different mentality about your so called speech at this press conference. Let's say you have a 10am Tuesday morning press conference. And you're expecting 10 reporters, let's say for local TV reporters. You're there, of course at 930. Well, 945, the ABC affiliate shows up.
Here's what I would do. I would say to the reporter, hey, I'm glad you're here. I know you're busy and you got a lot of other stories. I'm happy to just give you an interview right now we can cover all the stuff, get not trying to rush you off. You can stay the whole time. But you're here your cameras here.
Here's what I have found. Most reporters will say fantastic. I get an exclusive and I can get out of here. Now you're not giving it to them so far in advance that they can get it on the air before the other show up. Because then the other reporters are not going to be happy. But if it's only a few minutes earlier, it's really not going to affect who gets on the air that quickly.
So this way, you might get more time on that particular network affiliate. The reporter likes you, you made the reporters life easier. Everybody likes it. When the reporters life is made easier. So you go ahead and do that, now that they still might want to stay, but at least they have more footage. The other thing you can do, especially if you have any kind of assistant anyone else working with you, is let's say the press conference is about to begin in a couple of minutes and three more TV reporters all come in at basically the same time and they're busy setting up.
I would either myself tell them or if you have an assistant, any sort of press aide, let people know hey, we know you're in a hurry. The spokespersons day in the speech is going to say everything you really need to know and the first minute. Plus, he or she will be available to you for one on one interviews. As soon as the press conference is over. Now the TV people are feeling special. Now, you're happy to give this to radio or any reporters.
I mean your press conference you're trying to get press, he'll basically stay there as long as anyone wants to ask you questions. But let the TV people know because it's just more time consuming and more difficult for them to move around and do things and you want more TV coverage. So please keep that in mind. And that can be a way of getting a lot more coverage and better coverage and lengthier coverage from your press conference. So let the TV people know you can do one on one interviews before and after the press conference.
