Here's an advanced tip for those of you who are media trainers or PR persons public relations, people, public affairs, people in charge of getting people prepped for interviews. Here's my advice to you about media training. Don't ever call it media training. Don't ask an executive. Oh, would you like to do a media training before your interview? You'll get one of two responses.
One responses, no. The other responses, that would be great love to do it. There's no time for this one, but let's plan it again in six months. And that case, it never happens. There's a real problem with the term media training. Now that may seem odd to hear coming from someone who has a company named media training worldwide who's teaching a course that has media training in the title.
But there's a problem the word training implies deficiency you potty train a child is implies that the person you're working with the CEO, the top executive, the athlete, the superstar is deficient in something. And it seems like something that's really time consuming. So my recommendation is if you want to do a training with someone with a proper rehearsal, don't call it a training. The best thing to do is say, Hey, we got the big interview Thursday morning. Did you want to rehearse Wednesday afternoon or Tuesday morning? Don't use the word training.
That's the most significant thing. The next thing is don't ask if they want to do what you're asking when. The third thing is to use a term that people either either positive towards or neutral rehearsal. Everyone knows Broadway stars rehearse. There's no negative taint to that practice. Well, everyone knows the best golfers the best cricket players in the world.
Practice every day. So there's no assault on someone's competency or dignity. If you use those terms practice or rehearsal. Try it. It can make a huge, huge difference because you're working with someone. You can talk to them all day long about the interview.
You can give them the best prep notes. They don't rehearse. They're going to be mediocre at best.
