What's the difference between media training versus public speaking training, presentation skills training? Aren't they all kind of the same thing? No, no, I do both. I do media training and public speaking training, but they are completely different. The reason for that is, when you're talking to the media, it's completely unlike any other type of presentation you have in life, because you could talk to a reporter for an hour, two hours, two days, and one eight second quote is the only thing that gets in the story. It's this changing the context, the lack of context that completely changes everything about how you speak, how you answer questions, how you package your messages.
So that's why it's not enough to get public speaking training if you're going on a major TV show. It's also why media training isn't going to help you become a better public speaker. It's a different skill set. One isn't necessarily harder than the other. They're just different when you're giving a speech or presentation or talk to a live audience. Quite often the most important thing is telling interesting, compelling, memorable stories that can be fleshed out with characters and conflict and problems and emotion, how it was solved.
And that might take 30 seconds a minute to my might take 10 minutes to say, when it works. Audiences love stories if they can see you in person, or watch a lengthy video of your TED Talk. But when you're speaking to the news media for most edited stories, whether you're talking to a mainstream newspaper, a major news network, they don't have time to build a whole story, and that's why there's the importance of sound bites. As we talked about one of the soundbite elements, cliches, cliches work when it comes to getting yourself In the media, but if you give cliches in a speech, people will think you're an idiot on original uncreative, so they're very different. That's why I'm glad you're here in this course, if you're looking to learn how to speak to the media, if you want to learn how to speak to live audiences, well, there's tons of other public speaking courses here on Udemy.
I have a few myself.
