The best way to sell books is through the media. The best way to sell books through the media is to be the media rather than be an occasional guest or just to go on a book tour for a few weeks. So I know you might not want to stop what you're doing as a professor, expert consultant become a full time talk shows nor do those jobs come around quickly or easily. But I do want you to think about how you can somehow institutionalize what you do even if it's your own daily video on YouTube or your own weekly podcast, the more you can really build a regular relationship with a with an audience, the better. I mean, you look at the people who sell the most books in the world who are they? I'm not passing judgment on this and what I'm about to say may appall you, but it's people like Bill O'Reilly.
Why does bill o'reilly sell so many books? You might think it's because his books are just the best books in the entire world, but It probably has something to do with the fact that he's on national TV every single night for a couple of hours if you count the replay, and he has millions and millions and millions of people watching him every single week, and he has a relationship with an audience, and he's so well known, he could mention his book, and it's on his website and everyplace else, and every one of his books, goes to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Now, it's not just Fox, look at MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, was on national TV every day for four years before she wrote her first book, but when she did write her first book, did it sell copies. It went to the number one slot in the New York Times bestseller list.
So are you detecting a pattern here? If you want to sell books, the best thing in the world is to be in the media. Now if you can't be on primetime and major broadcaster cable TV network, at least Try to be on regularly on your own YouTube channel. Certainly your own blog, your Twitter, feed your podcasts, you want to establish a relationship with an audience. You want to be a part of a community, you want to be a leader of a community, Seth Godin use uses the term tribe, you want your own tribe. That's what being in the media does.
Bill O'Reilly, Rachel Maddow, they have their own tribe, they have people who really, really care about their take on the world. So when they put out a book, members of that tribe go by it, they don't ask questions, they just buy it. That's what you want. So I need you to think about if you're really serious about not just your books, but the ideas that you care about the ideas that are in your book, how can you disseminate those ideas on a regular basis, through some medium or you're comfortable with it, and you can build relationship with the audience. The best of all is obviously broadcast and major cable TV, but it could be your own weekly podcast. That's much better than just a book every two and a half years.
So think about how you can somehow not just be in the media but be the media.
