So where do you look? If you are doing a TV interview, and you're being interviewed, and you're not quite sure where to look, well don't do what I'm doing right now. That's the worst of all possible worlds. Here's the rule of thumb. You cannot go wrong. Looking at a reporter, a host, an anchor, if there's a person they're talking to you look at the person.
Now, if there's nobody there, or you're being interviewed through an earpiece, then by all means, look at the camera. But what you don't want to do is sort of play back and forth from the person to the camera. We've all seen people do this. Hi, Mr. Reporter, Misery Porter. Hi, everybody at home, back and forth. It looks awful.
It's the sure sign of an amateur. There's a grammar to television and the grammar is the person being interviewed looks at the person talking to them now that your own social media, your own YouTube and you're speaking directly to people then by all means, look at the camera. That's a simple rule of thumb. If someone's talking to you look at them. Nobody around. Look at the camera.
