There are four basic movements involved in massage:

  • Effleurage - a stroking movement
  • Petrissage - a kneading and consistent pressure movement
  • Tapotement - a percussion movement (tapping, beating, hacking, cupping)
  • Frictions - oscillating pressure applied in small circular movements
