We teach our children to say "please" and "thank you", but it's astounding how many adults ask for help in their job search and never show gratitude for a person's time or valuable advice. When you give genuine thanks for the help, you make a job search friend who may help you over and over again. It only takes a few minutes to write a "thank you" email. And you need to write these quick, but critically important notes throughout your job search. Whenever someone gives you a valuable lead or words of advice, make sure to thank them promptly. The most important part of the note, however, is not the actual "thank you", it's the offer to help the person in return. A simple "please let me know how I can return the favor" does the trick&mdash;but if you can actually suggest a way to help, that's even more sincere.
