DESCRIPTION:
Potential employers and networking contacts will first look at your headline. Then the next most valuable real estate on LinkedIn is your "About" section. Here you really want to spend time telling a story about yourself as a person and professional—so that potential employers get a sense of your personality and what you would be like as a team member and colleague. If you look at the LinkedIn profiles of friends and colleagues, you will probably not see the story approach I'm suggesting. That's because most people cut and paste their resume summary statement into the LinkedIn "About" section, leave the section entirely blank, or dash off a couple of sentences about the kind of job they're seeking. Just because most people don't tell a compelling story doesn't mean that you should follow suit. Not doing so is a missed opportunity to really catch the attention of potential employers...and the most engaging, interesting candidates do in fact take this approach.
Though it is...
