The elements of art are present in all things. And everything in our three dimensional reality can be interpreted with or explained using the elements and the principles of design and art. And the elements can be thought of as the parts. While the principles can be thought of how those parts are combined to create the whole, we'll be focusing on the elements today, because I think that they're the most important at this level, in our beginner stages of drawing, and by knowing the elements, and by being able to recognize them and put words to them, and to explain them, it can increase our level of perception, and our ability to interpret our drawing subjects more accurately, and also in more creative ways. Now, when I first learned the elements and principles of design, that's when my eyes really did open up to my surroundings, and I started to look at things completely different Li especially elements of nature and elements of architecture as well.

So when talking about the elements we start off talking about point, which I like to think of as dimension zero. It's a starting point it can also be a focal point. It can be multiple points joined together to create dots and to create pattern as well. And from point we then create line and line can be created by the movement of one point it can also be created by the joining of two different points. The line is really expressive in its own self, it can convey different emotions inherent with its own expression. For example, Lion can be very angry, it can be soft, it can envelop rigidity, it can be masculine, it can be feminine, it can have so many different expressive qualities to it, that noticing line and Exploring line in art and what others do can be a really fascinating topic all in its own line then transitions to shape because multiple lines joined together create shape, line defining an area creates shape.

And shape again has its own expressive quality shapes can often invoke strong emotions in us. My question to you is how do you feel towards triangles versus circles? How do you feel towards a square versus on organic shape? We often have different experiences with shapes and you've probably never thought about that before. So have a think about that today. What shapes do you like?

What shapes you drawn towards? What shapes Do you rebelled against? What symbolism do those shapes represent to you perhaps it could be some outside influence that is influencing your perception on that shape, and width shape, then comes form. So the moment that we turn something in a drawing on a page, from shape to form, we have to add dark and light, we have to add, where areas would be lighter and where areas would be darker to represent form on a page. So form is moving into the third dimension. how we perceive our three dimensional reality around us is through light and dark.

If we didn't have any light and dark, everything would look completely flat, and we would bump into everything all the time. So we perceive a three dimensional you know, reality by light coming down and hitting the surface of an object. So that process of the light coming down and hitting the surface of an object is something that we can learn to observe. We can look at how light is being reflected back to us. start to look at the world around you and look at the different shadows that are created on different objects. Also that light hitting the surface can be influenced by the different textures that are on that surface.

So a glass or the flat surface or a smooth surface would reflect the light very differently as opposed to a pebbled or a textured surface because that would reflect the light, light differently and you would have different lights and darks happening in different areas. And we can start to observe those and think about how we would translate that texture is a huge subject so you can have a texture that is very tactile, so you could touch and you can feel the texture. Imagine running your hand over gravel as opposed to glass. They have very different textures and they would also be represented very differently on the page. texture and time can often also be influenced very heavily by color. So when we start to introduce color, not only do we have color in its pure form, do we have black and white in their pure form.

We also have the different variations in between the total value of things. The light or the dark of a color is still light and dark. So, surfaces have a tonal value, they have a texture, they have a color, and all of those different things interact together. And as we've already explored quite a lot today, shape is also defined by the area around it or the negative space. The principles are about combining the elements and how you use the elements in relation to each other. There are many principles of design, some of them being movement, gradation, repetition, discord, harmony, contrast, proportion, balance, like different shapes, I am drawn to different principles of Art and Design.

I have quite a close affiliation with repetition for some reason, I really do love the principle of repetition. I also love the principle of balance, but I'm more of an asymmetrical Girl as opposed to symmetrical, I often like to make things asymmetrical in their detail. So I invite you with all of this new knowledge to practice presence in your own environment by really taking the time to observe the detail. This next exercise is about shading, straight hatching, cross hatching, stippling, graining and scumbling. And just practicing these different textures in a small area. And we will be applying these textures in more detail in the next lesson called shadow and light
