Identifying obstacles to transformation, pyramid of awareness. When we work with shifting beliefs, let's consider this pyramid of awareness representing a progression of discovery. From this graphic, we will see where all this belief discovery process is ultimately added. At the bottom, we identify the belief we ask ourselves, what is the idea or thought that is limiting us or our clients. Next, we loosen the belief by examining it. Once we know what the belief is, it begins to unravel or loosen its hold on us or our clients.
Often we simply need to Only shine a light on it. We say to ourselves, no, I don't want that. Think of silly beliefs we unquestioned as children? Did you avoid walking under ladders or stepping on cracks? pretty silly. Hmm.
Replace an old belief with a new belief. ask, Is there another belief that would be of greater benefit? What might that be? And how might I know that that is true? Next, we might decide to drop our need for a belief. Eventually, we may find we don't need a belief at all.
We begin to realize that thoughts are mind made. We understand that we have fabricated our beliefs based on the past, our heritage circumstances and so on. What would happen if we took each moment as it happens? and evaluate it fresh and new, moving down the ladder of inference that we talked about earlier. At the top of the pyramid, we have now reality. Beyond thoughts.
It's a full sense of presence. We can begin to live more fully and easily in the now in the present, responding in the moment, unencumbered by preconceived notions. What are obstacles to attaining goals and moving forward? When our clients hire us as coaches to help them achieve goals or create some change in their lives, there are two categories of obstacles that they face. The first category is external obstacles. External obstacles are usually clear and observable.
They are practical in nature, time oriented or with time constraints and native skill development, a need to have certain resources or maybe a need to have knowledge. Then we also have internal obstacles, and these are more intangible and relate to the client's inner life. These are attitudes, feelings, opinions, thoughts and points of view that get in the way of progress. Considering obstacles let's take a moment to understand the change process. This guy represents those internal obstacles or limiting beliefs our clients face. And these internal obstacles are what we want to uncover.
Gremlins or ego wants us to stay the same status quo. He gets really threatened with any change. So when our clients begin to contemplate change, the grilling starts stirring. We learn about Gremlins from the book taming your Gremlin by Richard Carson, a recommended resource. Let's look at a model for change or what I call the manifestation model, because it represents the process of manifesting what we want our goals and our internal processing on the left We see goals and dreams. Our clients come to us excited about the prospects of getting what they want, they set intentions.
The right side of the model represents the achievement of those goals and dreams. However, these intentions must pass through a barrier to be achieved. And that barrier is all our fears and doubts and uncertainties are Gremlins, if you will. Note that the bigger the dream, the louder the Gremlin yells and the scarier it becomes. It says to us or our clients, no, you can't do that. You won't survive it, because they will mean you will have to change to achieve your goal.
Turn back. This is where the internal obstacles we discussed earlier. come into play. It is our job as coaches to midwife our clients through this birthing process, so to speak, or guide them through the carnival like House of mirrors, so that they can get to the other side or to the exit door. Take note that when our clients reach this point in their coaching those blocks, that is when they are likely to cut and run, we will discuss in another course how to spot and navigate those tricky times. Take a moment to think about a big dream you achieved.
What did you have to overcome within yourself
