Building a good habit becomes more relevant you have a goal you want to achieve since with that in mind you are better equipped to identify actions if done repeatedly will help you achieve that goal.
The 3 tools are as follows:

Make it small

Define an action so that it takes less than 2 minutes daily


Document it

Set an 'x' every day when you have done your action


Share it

Tell people around you that you are building a habit



You can consider building good habits an insurance policy. Since it is to be expected that life goes up and down, and so in the low period's good habits will help you stay focused and control yourself to work yourself back up again.
A famous quote is:

"Don't wish for an easy life,
Wish for the strength to endure a tough life"
This strength you can build yourself - it's called habits.
