In this video, I would like to talk to you about hand expressing your breast milk and why it is such a useful tool when you're breastfeeding. The UNICEF baby friendly initiative recommends that all mothers are shown how to hand Express as it can be a very useful skill in a lot of breastfeeding situations. There's very little you need for hand expressing your breath look, you don't need any fancy pumps or devices. All you need is your hands and a pair of lactating breasts and expressing your breast milk can help in the following situations. Initially, your baby might be quite tired after a long labor, hand expressing some of your own claustrum the first myth that you will be producing and putting it around the baby smiles and on the big lips can help tempt a sleepy baby to the breast From day two onwards, you should aim to feed your baby eight or more times in 24 hours.

If despite all your efforts, your baby's not willing to Pete actively at the best, you can hand express your colostrum into a sterile cup or into a syringe. So you would go ahead and hand Express drops of colostrum into a sterile syringe, just gently collecting drop by drop. And if the volume is a little bit bigger, you can hand expressed into a sterile cup and your midwife can feed your claustrum to your baby until he or she attaches actively at the breast. So the main one What? cup seat. So usually, you would bring the MC to the edge of the cup and the baby would put his tongue fall down and forwards and lap up the milk like a cat.

And in that way, nipples confusion can be avoided. So the baby can have a cup feed or syringe feed. So with the, with the syringe, the midwife would gently insert the syringe in the corner of the baby's mouth and the baby let the baby lick up. The mids gently pushing the bolus of milk in or with the gloved finger, the midwife would insert her glove finger and let the baby suck on the finger while the baby receives the claustrum and this can also encourage will practice soccer and expressing can also be a lifesaver when you make comes in around stage three, postpartum. Around day three postpartum, your breasts can feel quite full lemon gorge, because the max coming in but also because you get extra fluid retention in the tissue, you've got lots of blood rushing to the breast delivering the milk as well. And breast can feel quite and gorgeous and poor, which can make it difficult for the baby to latch on.

In this situation and expressing some of your own MC can soften the nipple areola area and prevent the baby from slipping off. So it's much easier if the nipple areola era is softer for the baby to attach. Then when it's fall and the baby country Baby can get good hold on the breast. Once lactation is established, and you might be away from your baby for several hours just to run some errands or to get a bit of me time and then hand expressing can release breast fullness in just the very same way. If you're separated from your baby in the early days, usually if your baby requires to stay in the neonatal unit, early frequent hand expressing can help stimulate your milk supply and provide baby with much needed colostrum. If you find your milk supply, slow massage and hand expressing can help stimulate your breast and boost your supply.

Many mothers develop a block docked at some point during their breastfeeding journey. This can sometimes happen true as little as Sleeping on a full blast and knowing how to clear a block to hand expressing can help prevent mastitis, a breast infection, which can result from an untreated blocked. Hand expressing can even help you collect money for donation to the minute although most moms decide to use a breast pump for this purpose. Now, you might have heard that occasionally, some expectant mothers are asked to hand express their claustrum during the final weeks of their pregnancy to harvest colostrum is problems with breastfeeding or anticipated hand expressing antenatal Lee and potential side effects associated with it are not fully researched yet and should only be done under the supervision and instruction of your health care provider. Okay, so moving on to the Actual technique of hand expressing. As I mentioned earlier, there's very little you need, ensure that you sit comfortably and that you're relaxed your baby is with you have baby in skin contact, as this will release your oxytocin, also called the love hormone, which makes your mid flow.

If you're separated from your baby, it can have to think of your baby or look at the picture of baby maybe on your phone. Warm washcloth or gel pad, applied for about five minutes or so can help warm your breasts and widen your blood vessels and ducts for better milk flow. And sure your hands are clean. Then, start by massaging your breath. You can use your fingertips in the circular motion starting from the top towards the nipple. You can gently stroke the breast, or even gently need the breasts with your knuckles all around the breast, in which manner you massage your breath.

Doesn't really matter that much. Touch simply releases your oxytocin for milk flow. What's important is that you covered the whole breast for a couple of minutes prior to expressing. avoid being too rough and eager as this can cause tissue damage. Once you massage your breath, walk your fingers from the top down towards the areola, which is the dark area surrounding your nipple slope. Feel for change and texture around the edge of the areola where the lightest skin meets the darker skin and Some moms describe this as feeling like a texture like rice or sand grains.

Make a C shape with your thumb and four fingers and put your thumb and forefingers where you felt that change in texture. Then simply compress and release, compressed and release, compressed, and release. If this shows no results, you might need to move your fingers slightly forwards or backwards, or instead of simply compressing and releasing, pushing inwards towards the chest for first and then compressing down. Try avoid sliding on the nipple, as this could cause, repair damage and bruising. colostrum tends to flow slowly. It is an oily substance that seeps up very slowly, white mature milk drips, and even sprays.

Once you have a so called left and your fingers in the same spot until the milk flow subsides. Then rotate around the breast making more of a U shape with your thumb and forefingers to access the site ducts to if you feel your mech is flowing slowly, you might want to go back to massaging the breasts for a little bit. And then try again. After expressing one side to the other side and repeat the same By viewing the material of this online course, you are agreeing to accept all parts of the terms and conditions and medical disclaimer.
