DESCRIPTION: What: Here we are going to teach the puppies to look at us. Why: This can form the basis of, and help, with many behaviors, for example, if you are teaching loose lead walking, or a Sit/Stay. Eye contact can be a threatening behavior for dogs, therefore we want to teach our puppies that eye contact is a positive thing. It also gives us a tool for our pups to check in with us before going off to do something. How: Show your pup/dog that you have a treat in your hand in your fist, put your fist out to the side, When they look away from your hand towards you, mark it with your marker word ‘Yes, Good or Clicker’ and reward. Tips: In the video, there are a few missed opportunities to mark the behavior, Woody looks towards Gavin a few times, this is why timing is important. With Woody, he gives perfect eye contact now.
