Now it's time to talk about typography. As you probably know already, term typography refers to the properties of the text we're using in our design. typography is a complex topic, and we need to learn some terminology. In order to understand better what kind of text appearance we should choose for our design. Let's start from the typeface. A typeface is a group of characters such as letters, numbers, and punctuation that share a common design or style.
A font for example, is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface. If we put variation of the same font together, such as bold, light, italic or condensed, we obtain a font family. fonts are mainly divided into categories, sorry and sans serif. serif fonts have small decorative lines. At the end of the main lines sunseri or without serif don't. Sans Serif are often used for websites, since they are easier to read on the screen.
Arial for example, is a sans serif typeface that was specifically designed for screen use. To obtain a well presented text, choosing the right font is often not enough. In fact, the space between letters and between each text line is fundamental and often being forgotten. The distance between the characters is controlled by tracking kerning and letter spacing. Tracking is the adjustment of space between letters kerning is the reduction of space between the characters. These smaller precise adjustments may be used to tweak a specific word, such as in a logo design, the distance between lines Text is called leading.
It's really simple to understand, the bigger the leading, the bigger the space between lines. Now it's time for me to give you an important advice, so that you will avoid one of the classic mistakes that new designers make. There are a lot of techniques that you can use to make your text fit in the area you need. stretching the font is the worst idea you can think of. If for example, you need your text to occupy a longer block, try adjusting it by tracking. If you want to text to be thinner or bold, try to search for the font variation.
There are different standard text styles that you can choose to fill your needs. Let's watch an example using the font Helvetica. Roman is a standard style of the typeface not alter it by any characteristic Italian type, is it an angle usually slanting to the right bold or bold face is of a heavier weight than Roman type. Light type is thinner. Extended type is wider. condensed diet is a narrower face, which can fit into small spaces.
Most type families also provide various combinations of styles. This gives the designer even more options to work with. Now you know the basic concepts of graphic design and we are ready to study how to put all these things together and create a professional design. See you in the second part of this course.
