What constitutes good mental health in dogs? We tend to think of the ideal companion dog as being calm, stable and unflappable, happy and friendly. As in humans, these characteristics would seem to reflect good mental wellness. Happiness is to maintain optimal mental wellness. But what does it mean to be happy, from a dog&rsquo;s perspective? And how can we be sure that our own dogs are happy? The fact is, we don&rsquo;t really know what happiness feels like for a dog, but we can certainly infer (from their behaviour, body language, facial expressions) whether they are experiencing a positive, pleasurable emotion (comparable to our happiness), versus a negative emotion (like fear).
