To eaters language corner world of grammar. In this lesson, we are going to take a look at prepositions, specifically prepositions of place and time. The three prepositions we'll be focusing on, in respect to place and time will be at in an EN. Let us get started. So let's begin with defining what a preposition is. What exactly is a preposition?

Well, a preposition can best be defined as a word that links other words and phrases together. They help our sentences and ideas formulate into something that makes complete sense. Now, for this lesson, we are going to be looking at the use Add in and on. And all of act in and on all three can be used to discuss place as well as time. So let's start with prepositions of time. Beginning with specific time, when you want to discuss a specific time, the best preposition to use is at.

For example, we have class at 838 30 is a specific time on the clock. So therefore, I must use the preposition act. I went to bed at midnight. Now, midnight is not exactly a specific number, but it is considered a specific time on the clock. Midnight beaming beam 12 o'clock am our next preposition of time is used to express months, years and long periods of time. This preposition is in when you want to express months, years and long periods of time.

It's best that you use the preposition in. For example, the class starts in May. He was born in 1999. It rains a lot in the summer. Now in the summer would be an expression of a long period of time, as summer tends to be about three to four months long, well, depending on where you are in the world. So long periods of time, yours among all take the public position in next four days of the week.

And specific dates. The preposition you must use is on. For example, my class is on Monday, Monday is a day of the week. So any day of the week you have you must use on the party is on December 5. Now, I know you're probably thinking Wait a second, December is a month and we just talked about how months when we have months we need to use the preposition in. However, that is not the case here because we not only have the month we also have the date, the fit.

So anytime you pair, the date or even the year With the month, it becomes what we consider to be specific dates. So you must always use on for specific dates, December 5, December 5 1999. Okay. Now, let's transition to prepositions of place. For prepositions of place when we want to discuss specific points or location, you must use the preposition act that also includes addresses. addresses are considered to be specific locations.

For example, Gil is at school, school is my specific point or location. The school is at 3455 Elm Street. Now this is your address when you have the complete address It's very important that you use the preposition act. Now let's take a look at some other types of prepositions for place, enclose spaces, cities, as well as states, as well as countries. These all require the use of the preposition. And now, what exactly is an enclosed space?

Let's look at an example. The students are in the class, okay? The cost is considered to be an enclosed space. So what does that mean? That means it's inside of a building. Right?

There are walls there's a roof, there's a door, we consider that to be an enclosed space. So whatever you are putting something with me within another compartment or inside of a building, we can consider that to be enclosed. He lives in New York City. New York City is a city. Therefore I must use the preposition in. He lives in the US.

Us as a state, we must use the preposition. And I'm sorry, the US is not a state us is a country. But if I said Florida, in Florida or in Alaska that is a state and that requires you to also use the preposition And now for our next proposition of place, we have what's called surface as well as streets, avenues and roads. Whenever you have any of these two, you need to use the preposition on surface. Let's talk a little bit about surface. Here we go.

The book is on the desk. Oh, is very important here because we're dealing with surface. So what exactly is surface surface is when one object is making contact with another object. So the book is making contact on the desk. So therefore, we need to use on the book is making contact with the desk. We need to use on the book, make contact with your book back, or anything like that.

So anytime there's some type of contact being made, we must use on Now, as for streets, and avenues and roads, we simply use odd. Now, don't confuse this with the information prior about addresses. Remember addresses include the number right along with the street but if you just Have the street and you do not have the specific number you need to use on. So this is why we must say the school is on Elm Street, not at Elm Street because we don't have 3455. Now if it was the school is and then you have 3455 Elm Street then you use at because that is a complete address. Okay, now the next most important things we need to be mindful of are fixed expressions.

Now fixed expressions are nouns which are paired with specific prepositions. And for prepositions of time, we have some fixed expressions as well as for prepositions of place. So what does that mean? That means you must memorize them, okay? All right. So here's some examples of our fixed expressions.

For time, we have at night, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, on Monday morning, and on Tuesday afternoon. All of these are fixed expressions for time. Okay? Remember night, always use act and be mindful. Do not use the the article though. Okay?

It's not at the night. It's simply at night. Now let's go down to on Monday morning on Tuesday afternoon, because this is very interesting. Anytime you pair day of the week, with the time of day, you must use on but if you just have the day of the week, then you just use on and if you only have the part of the day, then you'd simply say in the morning in the afternoon in the evening All right. Now, let's look at some fixed expressions for prepositions of place, at home, at work, at the university, in a car, on a bus, on TV, on the left, on the right. All of these are examples of fixed expressions for place.

Now remember, you must memorize these. There is no specific reasoning behind it. It's simply the way that we say it. So memorize them. And I guarantee you, you'll never make a mistake when it comes to your prepositions of time and place, which are fixed. All right, so it's time for a little practice.

Well, for this practice activity, there will be a sentence and you will need to fill In the blank with the correct preposition at in or on. I will read the sentence and then give you a few seconds to decide before revealing the correct answer. Let's begin. Number one, I will meet you the cinema is it at in or on? I hope you said at because the cinema is considered to be a specific point a specific location. Okay, here we go.

Number two. Jasmine is arriving. February 13. Is it at in are on you guessed correctly on is correct. We have a specific date, the month plus The day that the jasmine is going to be arriving, which is the 13th. Okay, let's go to number three.

Patricia is the garden watering the flowers? Is it at in or on? If you said in you are absolutely correct. Now, why is it in the garden? Well it's in the garden because she is enclosed by the plants and surrounded by the flowers. So we would consider that to be in.

Okay, next example number four. The classes normally 9am Tuesday mornings. Now is it on, in on or on App A is correct. The class is normally at 9am on Tuesday mornings. That is absolutely correct. Great job.

All right, we have one more. Let's see if you can get this. They live the United States at and are on. Well, I hope you said in because the United States is a country. So therefore, we must use the preposition in. Okay, thank you so much for joining me here at elite this language corner.

I hope that this information helped you and feel free to repeat and review this lesson at any time that you need to refresh your memory on prepositions of time in place. See you soon.
