Okay, we're almost ready to begin our session on how you deliver your speech, the speaking techniques. But first of all, you will have seen that when I gave my speech, I was using notes, I'd never be without them, and nor should you. So that's what I'm going to look at. Now. There are of course, some people who seem to be able to speak without notes, and maybe you'll be able to do this one day, but I wouldn't recommend that you try until you are comfortable will experience and you know that you're speaking about something that you know very well and maybe have delivered several times. Some appear to speak without notes, but they have an autocue.

Not that we're in that league at all are waiting and you'll remember that I used these cards for my notes when I delivered my speech to you. I happen to like this method, but it's not the only one. And the sorts of notes you use is very much down to what you prefer. We suggest you try Come out and decide which suits you best. But why do we need notes at all? I'll have a quick look at the reasons before Jasmine shows you how to prepare them.

Your speaking notes are what you use to help you deliver your speech. You develop them from the full text of your speech, and you have them with you when you speak. They're there to give you support and confidence. You should never be afraid to use notes. They're necessary, especially in long speeches or difficult speeches where specific wording needs to be delivered accurately, but don't read them. There are many types of speaking notes you can use, including no notes at all.

Some speakers and trainers say you must use a certain type of note or strongly recommend one type or another. We make no such rules here. As Jasmine said, you should use the type of notes that suit your speaking and the venue. Check. Is there a lectern? How big is it?

Where will you put your notes? How can you hold them? The important point is that you know shouldn't be intrusive and you should need them seem to be reading them notes down below as you use them on them back to Jasmine, who tell you through different sorts of notes and how to prepare them. Thanks, Sam. I'll start with the cards that I was using. This is the favorite with lots of different speakers, but he doesn't suit everyone.

So don't let anyone tell you that this is the only way to do it. Now, the card filing cards are good to use, just have key words or phrases on them. Maybe just the headings and subheadings from your text, but perhaps you might have important phrases included as well. Here are the cards for my speech. Writing large enough letters that you can read them at arm's length, and don't put too many words on one card. Right words for one of the main points of a speech and also number two cards in case you drop them.

You can also include states directions, I'm doing mine with a different color. Don't fasten the cards together because they're difficult to handle. Now, you could use one card for the beginning, maybe three or more depending on how many points you have to make for the middle of your speech, and maybe one for the end of your speech. As you can see, this is what I did for my speech. Now another frequently used type of note is to have the full script of your speech in front of you as you speak. You have to be very careful with using a full script.

The intention is not to read from the script but use it as a prompt if you need it as a safety net, something that you have in front of you. The script is best word process using headings and subheadings. Use a font size large enough for your eyesight serif font is usually easier to read. Now, PostScript is probably best reserved for when you're speaking from a lectern. And the paper can be hidden from the audience. But there's nothing to stop you holding them in the open, providing you use them properly.

A4 paper it's a good size for notes, but you might consider using a five, especially if your lectin is restricted in size. Before the speech, you can highlight headings and important words or phrases in different colors to make them stand out on the page. Again, you can also add stage directions for yourself, for example, to show where you're going to pause, make a gesture, or you're going to vary your voice. These are things that we're going to cover in later videos. When you rehearse your speech, you can put a timing marker so that you know whether you're keeping up to schedule. It's a bit like a musical score.

Really, how you layout your text on the page for ease of reference is very important. large blocks of text can be confusing and it might not seem When I use the full text of a speech, I like to set it out using two column formats on my word processor. This layout allows me to easily focus upon smaller blocks of text. Here's the same speech written out in two columns. The columns make it easier for me to scan the text. And if I look down at my notes at any time, it's easier to find where I am.

It's all really a matter of your own preference. We've included the text of jasmine speeches downloads this module, so you can compare the layout which might be best view. We've also included a download of the next type of notes the jasmine is going to talk about an increasingly popular type of speaking note is to use a mind map. You can draw mind maps by hand on paper, or even on card. In fact, it's possible to have your whole speech laid out on just one card like this Alternatively, you can use one of the many mind mapping programs on your computer. There are a lot out there and quite a lot of them are free.

With a mind map, you have a picture of the whole of your speech in front of you. Again, it's useful to color code some of the main points and you can include stage directions and timer markets. Here's an illustration of a mind map I made on my computer for a presentation about speech construction. Once you've done your speaking notes, they're not set in stone. Remember, practice, revise, practice. Again, real quick.

And Practice, practice until you've got it right. A little later in the course, we'll have a look at how you can use your notes when you're speaking live to your audience. Let me reassure you that most people need to use notes. They give you support confidence, so don't think that you shouldn't use them. So, if you are writing your speech along with this, now's the time to try out writing your notes. With the increasing use of tablet computers, iPads, Android devices, etc.

They now give us an alternative means of writing and using our notes. A tablet is small and and conspicuous and often only needs a subtle swipe to change from one screen to another if you use it to display your speaking notes. If you're using electrum a tablet will sit there nicely out of sight. How then, do we use a tablet for writing and displaying our notes? In the next video, I'll explain how you can use your tablets for your notes.
