Oh, no, I'm not ready. Nope. Sorry about that. I didn't realize we'd started. Anyway, I didn't realize it. Would you start today, we'll just have a lunch.

I do love a combination of a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, a BLT command day, which is embarrassing, but nonetheless, let's carry on. In this short video segment, I'm going to introduce you to something very simple but important. It's referred to as speech construction. It's the way of speech hangs together, you have something important to say. So you arrange it in a logical and clear way so that your audience can easily follow your argument to your message. The structure or arrangement of your speech is the framework that holds everything together.

Always remember that a speech without a clear structure. will not go down well with your audience and won't get your message across. They simply won't know what you're going on about. Luckily, the rule of threes will help us out. It's an interesting fact of human psychology, we often appreciate an odd number of things better than an even number, and that we especially respond to things in threes. In fact, I can use this BLT to illustrate what I mean.

You can think of the speech as being a bit like a sandwich, it's made of three parts. The top slice of bread is an introduction. The filling is an important bit, and I've got three fillings here. This is like three important points in your speech. And the bottom slice of bread is like a conclusion. That's brilliant.

Oh, hi, Jasmine. Yes, it is, isn't it? Yeah, that's really clever. He's in the sandwich. Yeah. Good thinking about man.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm sorry about the sorry about earlier. Yeah, no, no, don't worry about it. So do you always use the three part theory you know, when you're writing a speech usually The laws be a beginning, a middle and an end. I'll usually have three important points in the middle section as well. But if I don't have three, I'll try an even an odd number.

It just seems to work better that way. Okay, so, leaving aside your BLT yet, you can finish that later. Can you summarize the structure of a good speech for us? The beginning is the introduction to speech. This is when you capture the interest of the audience and make them want to listen to the rest. Maybe you'll also let them know what you're going to tell them.

The middle is the main part of the speech. This is where you set out to develop the main points of your argument. This needs to be arranged well, then is often made up of three main points. The End, is the conclusion of the speech. This is where you sum up everything you've said, you'd be able to put everything together and inspire or infuse your audience. So which is the most important would you say, oh, they're all important Really?

Well, the main body is where you set out your arguments. You've got to have a good beginning to capture your audience's attention and a good ending to consulting Do what you told them. So how long do you reckon each part of your speech should take roughly? Well, in terms of time, it kind of depends on the on the length of speech really. I reckon the beginning and end should be about 15% of the total time and the middle, the remaining 70%. But that's, that's just a rule of thumb.

So a 10 minute speech might have a beginning and an end. That's about a minute and a half, and then the main body is about seven minutes. Yes, that's about it. But as I said, it's only a rough guide. I think that we should give our subscribers a couple of examples, don't you? Yes.

Let's ask guy to join us and tell us about his paper making speech. Hey, guys, so guy, how will you plan your speech? Well, my beginning will highlight the importance of paper with probably some famous historical examples, and I'll also let the audience know what I'm going to speak about. My middle will discuss three things, the history of paper, traditional methods of making paper and how paper is made now, the end of my speech will Give a quick summary of what I've spoken about and look forward to the continuing importance of paper in our digital age. Thanks, guy. So this is it in our line.

Jasmine, do you have an example? Yeah, actually, I have, I've prepared a speech that I'm going to deliver to you later on in the course. And it's about social media and how it's opened up a new channel of communication. That's true. Will you tell us how it will be erased? Or is it a secret?

Ah, no, no, it's not a secret. So my beginning will ask the audience if they've ever been hashtag retweeted or light. The middle section we'll look at social media as the modern channel of communication and examine its good and bad effects. The end or draw this together and give some moral pointers to the use of social media. We'll go to that Jasmine. So we've looked at speech construction in this video because it is very important.

Don't assume that your audience is skilled at active listening will immediately follow every point that you're talking about without help from you. That's why it's important. In the next video segment, we're going to look at the three parts of speech in more detail so you can see what it's all about. See you then
