While we're looking at the way you appear, when you are speaking, will continue by considering things like gestures, eye contact, and how you move around or not while you're speaking. Then in the next few videos, we'll take a look at your voice and vocal techniques. gestures that you make with your hands or indeed any part of your body can certainly enliven and add point to a speech, but be careful. We are always making gestures with our hands, most of them and consciously remember that our hands are wonderful speaking tools, but they can lead to stomp badly when they seem to develop a mind of their own and began to act independently making meaningless thrashing movements fascinating but distracting to all your audience. Watch presenters on television using their Try to pick out the good, the bad, and the ugly. So, gestures or movements that you use to add meaning and emphasis to your speech.

They illustrate, emphasize and heighten the spoken word. Do remember that we comprehend speech by what we see as well as by what we hear. So the way you look and sound is as important as what to say. So, gestures must have a purpose and be appropriate. Despite all of this, though, speakers often don't think to use gestures at all, and will basically wave their hands around. So you need to know how to do them properly and actually to plan them when you write your speech.

Don't just think that gestures are just about using your hands. You can gesture with your whole body, with your face and your eyes. We all are different and have different styles of speaking, and a gesture needs to be comfortable with your individual persona. Ideally, a gesture should not look contrived or distract, nor should your speech be overloaded with gesture I'll give you a few tips on how to do them and how not to do them, while guy and Ian will demonstrate them for you. Firstly, how should they be done? Make your gesture well time to emphasize a particular phrase, a word or symbol and make it appropriate to what you're saying.

The gesture should be proportional to the speech and fit your personality. gestures should be well thought out and unless deliberately needed, not be jerky, but be smooth and flowing, perhaps involving the whole arm or part of the body. Very your gestures and don't favor one hand. If there is a lectern or a table, make your gestures above it, so that they're not hidden from the audience. gestures made above elbow level have greater impact than those made below. guy will demonstrate how it should be done.

People with more fundamental or perhaps morally questionable views, then you're actually bridge job can cold stairs and discomfort. I'm sure that you have noticed that to be effective gestures should be clearly visible to all your audience. For example, not behind the lectern and not to be brief. The scope of your gestures should also depend upon the size of the venue and the size of your audience. On a personal aspect, social media can be used for internet bullying and victimizing. It gives people the opportunity to upset and got it 24 seven.

Online bullying is a very serious problem and should not be overlooked or dismissed. The victims of bullying at school for example, would like to go home and escape, not sign into their computer and be faced with more endless hurtful words. The larger the venue, the larger and more expensive your gestures need to be unless perhaps you are in a very Large venue where you are also on a screen. People with more fundamental or perhaps morally questionable views than your average Joe can called stairs and discomfort. Now, people have the right to believe in what they want. But when they express these extreme views or Attack of the people, sexism or racism for example, offense can be taken and problems begin.

In a small venue, the audience is close enough to see your face and your eyes and the gestures can be smaller. Thank you guy. Now in will show us how not to do them. Don't telegraph your gestures or use them in the wrong place. I can't emphasize it enough but the gesture should be appropriate to the speed due to many gestures and you may look like a puppet and appear silly. Don't make certain gestures unless they're required by the speech.

Remember what guys said in Module 11 Don't clap your hands or grasp the election. This restricts your ability to do gestures and they look artificial. Now, people have the right to believe in what they want. But when they express these more extreme views or attack other people, sexism racism for example, offense can be taken. Our problems begin on a personal aspect. Social media can be used for internet bullying, and victimizing gives people the opportunity to be upset and gossip.

24 Seven. Online bullying is a serious problem and should not be overlooked or dismissed. The victims of bullying at school for example, would like to go home and escape not sign into their computer and be faced with more endless hurtful words. Thank you, Ian. So you see, there's a lot you can do to enhance your speech. But not if it's overdone.

Eye contact is a gesture and it's vital. It's important that you keep as much eye contact with your audience as you can. You are speaking to them, not avoiding them. We sometimes hear the advice to look across the audience to the back of the room. That's totally wrong. You need to show every member of the audience that you are speaking to them.

Eye contact keeps you in communication with your audience. And it also makes you appear approachable and competent. It builds rapport. scan your eyes, across everyone in the room, just like I'm doing. And keep doing it. Whenever you're not looking at your notes.

Move your head positively, to show that you're doing it. Don't pick one person out and don't look at anyone for more than a second or two at a time. At the moment though, I'm talking to you personally. So I'll continue Look at you with me. As we said right at the beginning of the course, this sort of scanning is a great help to you. Because if you are nervous just looking at one person at a time makes the audience seem like individuals that you're talking to, rather than an intimidating mass.

Now, to move or not to move, that is the question. Consider whether you need to move around at all, but some speeches are best delivered in one position. Some might benefit from some movement. And this can give a certain amount of variety, especially in a large room. But do be careful. If you use too much movement, you can distract your audience.

If you do, move around, don't move in regular patterns, or your audience will be watching you and counting your paces anticipating when you're going to turn the result. You lose their attention on what you're saying. As Ian will show you And step three, three, and side. Three. Okay, I think we've made the point. some slight movements toward the audience can emphasize a point.

But remember, your space and their space, moving too far towards the audience can feel threatening. some slight movement backwards can encourage your audience to think about a point with you, on the whole movement to the side is better than movement backwards and forwards. A trick that sometimes use is to use different sides of the central position to emphasize contrasting points. Well, I think that's enough. What I suggest now is that you deliver your speech in front of a mirror or a webcam, but now use gestures and eye contact so that you can see how you look. Join us in the next video.

Which is all about your voice and how you use it when you speak in public. It's very important
