Look, no assemblies this time. Last time, we talked about the structure of speech. And we saw that a good speech has a three part structure. We have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The middle part, which is our argument is often itself made up of three main points. In this segment, I'll be taking a closer look at all three segments.

But I'll begin with the beginning and the end of his speech. You might ask why I'm starting with these because the middle is where we make our arguments. So Julie is the most important part, isn't it? Well, the beginning and the end are important as well. Because the beginning of your speech is when you capture the audience's attention And the end is where you sum up and leave your audience with a powerful message. So let's have a look at them in turn.

A good beginning is vitally important. This is where you grab your audience's attention and set the scene for your message. It's also where the audience is at its most, its most receptive. So grab them and make them like you. I want to continue listening to you convert their attention to interest. If you lose your audience now, you've lost them the whole speech.

So give them a punchy, powerful and succinct opening, make an impact and indicate your purpose. Answer their unspoken question, why should I pay attention? So simple as that? You can make an impact with what you say and especially how you say it? We'll look at the techniques of how you actually deliver your speech later in the course. So we'll cover that then.

Unless you're doing a question and answer session. Do keep the beginning to yourself. If the audience join in when you don't want them to, you can lose your impetus takes a lot of skill and experience involve the audience right from the start, and for the moment, it's probably best avoided. Let's look at a few examples of punchy opening lines to help me with my charming assistant. Jasmine, thank you very much in what I'll do is suggest a number of different types of opening and Jasmine will make a beeline to go with it. And you'll notice she's speaking the right sort of expression for each one.

Let's start with deliver a strong or emphatic statement. This is the age of the motorized roller skate, ask a rhetorical question. Do you want to keep one step ahead of your competitors? Now be careful with this one. They might answer you and break up your opening. You could for example, The audience something they want.

I will show you how to you could make a shock statement. This government will soon fall, or We're all doomed. You could challenge the audience. Unless you face the fact that you could refer to current issues. The current double dip recession will no doubtedly. Create an image analogy or metaphor?

Imagine for a moment, you could deliver short and relevant anecdote. When I started out as a junior secretary, my boss said to me, You can state startling or unusual facts. The first motorized roller skate was in a Mickey Mouse book. Thank you, Jasmine. Maybe you'd like to think of the beginning to your speech. You can pause the video Do what you give it some thought or if you prefer, just carry on viewing.

Once you've made your opening statement, go on to explain, let the audience know what you're going to speak about. Now we'll take a look at the other end of your speech. The ending. The ending of your speech is just as important as the beginning, go out with a bang. As a general rule, don't introduce any new material at the end of your speech. This is the climax of your speech.

So use it to summarize and reinforce your message and maybe call your audience to action. Your final statement also gives a sense of closure. And at the very least, let the audience know that you've finished your audience with remember your key message short, sharp sentences are effective. And your last sentence should be strong and final finish on an update. Don't fade out and then just suddenly, stop. Yeah, it's amazing how many speakers just drift into a close or simply just fade away.

The audience is left deflated wondering whether the speakers actually finished and they don't know whether it's applaud and it gives the impression of a lack of competence by the speaker in their own message, the audience is certainly not going to be inspired. Now, it's more difficult for Jasmine to demonstrate some good endings. Because so much depends on what has gone before in the speech, we you'll see some good endings when we do some speeches for you. So this is where you summarize and reinforce your argument and finish off with a strong, inspiring statement. Here are some ideas for your endings either on their own or combined according to what you need to say. Suggest answers to questions, refer back to your opening remarks.

Summarize the points you have made, make an appeal use emotion or drama. Now, guess Jasmine? Is there anything else to say? Yeah, just a couple of things. We'll be looking at how you write unusual speech notes later on. But for now, it's important that you don't fluff your lines at the beginning and end so always memorize your opening and closing sentences and practice them.

Another useful tip is imagine that you're in the audience. Would you opening and closing statements interest inspire you? Thanks, john. Thank you, I will not ask you to think about your ending speech now, because you've written it. So in this video so far, we've looked at the importance of the beginning and end of our speeches. Now we'll take a brief look at the middle part of the speech, where you put over the points of your argument.

You now captured your audience's attention and interest with the beginning. So how should you carry on because this is the main part of your speech, you need to decide what points you're going to put across, and then present them in logical sections that will allow your audience to follow and to digest what you're saying. Remember that for a clear structure, research has shown that three to five clearly defined main points are usually effective with three being the better because the mind often works in threes, and the facts are easier to retain. Arrange your material to build your argument towards the conclusion and make sure that each point is properly supported and developed with appropriate material. So no Have a good idea of what is required of a speech. How do you write it?

In the next segment, we'll take a good long look at how we suggest you gather material and arrange it into an effective speech. To illustrate it, we'll look at Jasmine speech about social media. Ah, yes, social media. Okay, I better go and do that right away then. So we'll see you next time.
