Let's start looking at me, the public speaker by asking you to consider my appearance. That is how you look to your audience. Now, you might think it's strange that I start with your parents. But when you stop and think about it, what is the first thing your audience sees when you walk on to do your speech? It's your appearance, of course. And that's why I'm looking at it now.

It is important. Remember how you look is how you create your first impression, how you are perceived. by parents, I mean, the way you dress and the way you stand to deliver your speech. I should use jasmine and Ian as models to show you what I mean. How formal is the speaking engagement? How will the audience be dressed?

How do you want others to see you? What nonverbal message are you sending dress well and give the impression that you're successful? Remember that some events are more formal than others and that you certainly need to dress appropriately for the occasion to keep your clothing appropriate. If in doubt, smart corporate clothing is a safe bet, and if you think the venue will be particularly warm, darker clothing is the most suitable after all, who wants to see patches of sweat on the speaker? Now, there are a few things you can consider and I'll consider women's and men's clothes separately. Ladies, if you wear a blouse, check that your buttons are secure.

Are all your zippers fastened? Do you really need to wear that dress or top of that low Kurt? Is your jewelry appropriate? in particular are you wearing earrings are so big they could be distracting to the audience. Gentlemen, are your fly's undone? Is your time if you're wearing one appropriate and not too distracting?

Are you wearing socks? Now? Right. What is the appropriate thing to do with your jacket? Do you fasten it up? Leave it undone, take it off.

Generally dress appropriately for the event. Be smart. Pay attention to personal hygiene. Don't have dirty or unkept shoes, keep your hair tidy. And now for the fashion show, Jasmine and Ian will first of all show you how not to dress. Can you spot where they're going wrong?

Thank you, Jasmine. Thank you, man. And now I'll ask them both to come back on again but this time to show you how it should be done. Another important thing to consider when you walk on to speak apart from your parents is the way you stand. You need to consider how you stand both for the nonverbal impression you make and for your own comfort. Give yourself a check from head to toe is your body language positive for comfort, and to make a good impression stand as relaxed as you can with your weight evenly balanced on both feet, toes and heels on the ground and legs shoulder width apart.

Don't rock backwards and forwards. It's very distracting. Try to relax your shoulders so that you don't hunch and tighten up. It can also help your breathing. Try to relax your knees a little and don't get rigid or you'll not be able to breathe easily. Easy breathing gives a confident impression and of course makes your speaking easier.

Relax, look around the room and see Smile. What do you do with your hands. Our hands are wonderful speaking tools, but they can sometimes have a mind of their own and lead us down badly, especially when we're nervous and inexperienced. When you stand up to begin your speech, keep your hands relaxed and still, I've got a few tips for you. You can hold your hands at your sides. You can hold your hands loosely together in front of you at waist level, not lower.

Hold your notes if you don't have a lectern, but don't wave them around. If there is a lectern, you can hold it loosely. Rest your fingers on it, but don't grip it tightly. Don't at any time, put your hands in your pockets. Don't wring your hands. It looks like you're watching them and your audience will think you're nervous.

In the next video, we'll take the next step and look at how you use your body wants to speak will cover gestures eye contact and moving around and will remind you your stance as well.
