DESCRIPTION: The systemic circulation: flows from the left ventricle to the aorta and thence via other arteries to the capillary beds in the head, neck, trunk, and limbs. It returns to the right auricle (atrium) of the heart via the systemic veins. Food is absorbed, passes into the capillary bed in the digestive tract, and is carried by the portal vein to the hepatic or portal circulation.
In the pulmonary circulation: blood flows from the right ventricle to the lungs where oxygen is taken up by the blood and carbon dioxide (CO2) is given off. The blood then returns to the left auricle (atrium).
