The roof of the mouth is formed by the hard palate and the soft palate which end in the uvula, a small soft structure hanging from the free edge of the soft palate, in the midline above the root of the tongue. Upon swallowing, it prevents food or fluid from refluxing into the nasal cavity. The tongue is a muscular organ. The surface of the tongue has tiny projections called papillae which contain nerve endings for a taste sensation.
The frenulum is a fold of mucous membrane which attaches the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. The mouth is kept moist by secretions from the salivary glands, the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. The fauces are arches on each side where the mouth meets the pharynx.
