DESCRIPTION:

Where two bones glide over one another in semi-attachment, joints are formed. They facilitate movement. Where the surfaces of the ends of the bones come together, they are covered with a thin layer of cartilage. Between the layers of fibrous tissue called ligaments are formed Inside, the cells of the lining of the joint give out a small amount of slippery fluid (synovial fluid) which keeps them lubricated and allows free movement. Joints have either no movement, a slight movement, or free movement.
Types of Joints

Ball and socket: a joint that is formed by the rounded head of one bone to the cuplike socket from another bone.

Hinge: movement is permitted in one plane only for example the knee or elbow joints

Pivot: one bone rotated around another which remains stationary like the first cervical vertebra pivots on the second

Gliding: the articulating surface of one bone slides on that of another to a limited extent

Types of movements

Flexion: flexed when it is bent,...
