This is our very first lesson because, in order to begin a positive training relationship with your dog, you need to teach him to expect good things from a training session. Why do we use a clicker? Imagine a very active dog or puppy. You want him to sit, but he's so busy. His body is in constant motion: running, jumping, spinning, lifting his left paw, wagging his tail, licking his lips, moving his ears, momentarily sitting, then jumping back up again and chasing his tail. How can you communicate to him that the very instant he sat, that was the "correct" behavior? You will tell him by using a clicker. Imagine that when you push the clicker button you are pushing the button on a camera and that you are "taking a picture" at the exact moment the dog is doing the behavior you want to reinforce.
