One important thing to remember when teaching your dog the cue word “down” is that you don’t want to confuse your dog by saying “down” when you want him to take his paws off the counter or take his body off the couch. Use the word “off” for those situations. Down means that your dog’s belly goes down to the floor. There are several ways to show a dog that he gets rewarded for lying down. Luring, shaping, or capturing the behavior all work, but it will depend on you and your dog which way works best for you. Whichever method you choose, try to remember to give several tiny treats while the dog is still lying down to help build duration and calmness into this behavior. To teach down by luring, use treats to lure the dog into a down position, then click when the dog’s belly hits the ground. Some dogs can be lured by covering a treat with your hand on the floor.
