Puppies’ natural inclination is to jump up on other dogs and on people to ask for attention. People, however, generally don't appreciate muddy paws on their good clothes or big dogs knocking over children. So how can you live in harmony with an exuberant dog, who is just doing what he was born to do? It’s a profoundly simple reward calm and polite behavior to teach him to communicate with you calmly. When a dog jumps on you, and you give him attention in any way yelling, shouting, pushing him down, petting him, etc. you communicate to the dog that he gets what he wants, your attention, by jumping on you. When you find ways to reward him for calm behavior, he will learn to communicate with you in a way that is pleasant for both you and your dog and little kids, and gramma, and your guests.
