These classes are for anyone interested in creating their own flower crowns. No experience is required. I aim to make the floral design more sustainable and explore ancient history and archaeology in these eight sessions to teach different mechanical methods based on what the ancient Greeks and Romans would have used, a time before there were plastics, tapes, and glues used in floristry. All of the classes begin with a bite-sized history, mythology, and/or archaeology lesson to explain the inspiration for the crown we make in the session. Following this, I teach you detailed methods on how to make your crowns. The crowns can be worn, used as wreaths, or can make great bases as candle and table arrangements.

Everything we make is fully biodegradable, and I encourage the use of locally grown and gathered materials. It is a great way to learn some sustainable floral design techniques and connects you with your local environment. It also brings a bit of nature into your own homes.

What will you learn in this course?

Creating the crowns is calming and mediative and is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the natural materials you use.

The classes are as follows:

• Introduction: I introduce myself and explain the inspiration for the eight lessons.
• Lesson one: Basic and simple ivy crown. Wine and the ancient god of wine, Dionysus or Bacchus are the inspiration for the first crown made of ivy. This is the simplest crown we will make.
• Lesson two: We learn a bit more about the god Dionysus/Bacchus, then I teach you how to embellish your ivy crown with berries and pinecones.
• Lesson three: The ancient Olympics are the topic of this class. Following an introduction to the archaeology and history of the ancient Olympics, we make a classic olive branch crown which was the prize for ancient Olympic victors. It was also a symbol of peace. In the third segment of the lesson, I teach you how to embellish your olive crown.
• Lesson four: This is a brief lesson where we look at Roman art to recreate an ancient crown base made of raffia. We use the base in lessons five, six, and seven.
• Lesson five: We learn about the goddess ceres also known as Demeter in this class and the importance of grain in the ancient world. We then make a simple wheat crown to learn a fundamental weaving technique. 
• Lesson six: Ceres is still our inspiration for this lesson, but we change our weaving technique and add wild sunflowers to our wheat crown.
• Lesson seven: Here we learn about the significance of crowns in the Roman military. We then make the classic corona Gramineae or grass crown, which was the highest honor a Roman officer could receive. A third weaving method is introduced in our crown-making session.
• Lesson eight: We conclude with a sewn flower crown, made in honor of the ancient god Mars, the Roman god of warfare. In this class, we sew a rosebud crown and make a wristlet out of rose petals.
