In this lecture, we will basically give a quick run through of what we did in the previous lecture, which was building a winning resume, and then try to polish it so that it is an absolute perfect piece of document. I would like to start off by saying that one thing that is extremely important is that your resume should not be more than one page. As I mentioned in my previous lecture, that hiring managers don't have the time to go through each and every detail. So just mentioned your core strengths and your core skills and make sure that they are highlighted at the top. So make a one page document that actually stands out. Following this what you have to do is just go through your resume and make sure that you have used attractive words that actually help you stand out.
Now, these words I mentioned in the earlier lecture, there are a number of words that you can use, for example, synergy improvise proactive, analysis, competitive advantage, so on and so forth. Make sure that similar words have been used in your resume, but kindly ensure that you have not overused them Then once you have gone through your resume, again, I would like you to just go through your objective statement. As I mentioned earlier, it should have two parts, the first part mentioning of who you are, and the second one of who you want to be. This is followed by ensuring that you have mentioned your academic credentials properly. And also your internship projects and your thesis as well. These carry a huge weightage for those individuals who lack experience and would like to compete with experienced candidates in the market.
So whatever that you did during different projects, and your thesis, what exactly was your role in those specific projects and thesis should be mentioned very clearly in your resume. If you want, you can also mention any kind of voluntary work that you have done back in your university days, or as an intern or as a freelance person as well. Because if you lack experience, you have to show some kind of voluntary work that you've done in the past and while doing so use action words which identify exactly what you did. Then after this, you have to make sure that you have mentioned your specialization. So while your academic credentials are there, make sure that you highlight the key specializations that you have acquired, both in your university and also if you've done any kind of work with any organization, after mentioning your specializations, it is important that you mentioned any kind of professional training that you have acquired.
Now, I know it is difficult for fresh graduates to actually go and attend different training programs because they cost a lot of money. But online, you can find a lot of trainings that are relevant to your specific experience and your specializations. And they will carry good weightage on your resumes, like you just need to invest some time and just attend some of the online trainings or webinars so that you can mention those in your resume and make it more attractive. Now once you've gone through all this while polishing your resume, there are certain questions that you have to ask yourself again. The first one is that does your resume have proper spacing in between so that it is easily readable? Remember if it is not easily readable.
No hiring manager will go through the tedious task of going through paragraphs and different points that have not been highlighted properly. The second question that you have to ask again, is, does your resume have a good attractive branding statement so that it is easier for you to sell yourself? Remember, at the beginning, the only thing that you have to sell yourself is your resume, or that one piece of paper lying in front of the hiring manager. The third question that you have to ask yourself is that whether your branding statement is consistent with the quality in the rest of the document or your resume? The last question that you will have to ask is that whether the quality of the paper that you're using reinforces your branding statement and all the other things that you've mentioned in your resume. Now, here, I would like to inform you that most cases, you will be emailing your resumes now, because right now, most organizations are moving towards a paperless environment.
So keeping that in mind, make sure it looks attractive, but having said that, when you go in person to present yourself in an interview, you will have to take a piece of paper with you. So make sure that the texture of the paper is fine and it represents you as an attractive brand.
