Customizing your resume according to every application, this is something that you will have to do if you want to succeed. The thing is that as a hiring manager, I've come across so many resumes that are totally irrelevant. And what candidates do is that they just share one generic format or one generic resume for 10 different types of applications. This is the worst mistake that you can make. Remember, when I'm drafting a resume, do go through the job description that you have available, and write your resume accordingly, and use the keywords that are mentioned in the job description in your resume appropriately. So what I'm trying to say is that appropriate customization will always pay off.
If you use keywords, your resume will be automatically highlighted when the hiring manager runs a search on the system. Another thing is that if your resume is customized according to that application, the possibilities of him or her being impressed will be much more than a simple genetic algorithm. The first step is that you must review the job description. This point has been repeated again and again in the past, so just make sure it is customized appropriately. Second thing that you can do is that make sure that your objective statement or your branding statement is also customized.
Your objective statement should be different when you're applying in IT company. Compared to a management consultancy company or maybe a finance organization sector to sector you can modify your branding statement so that it becomes more appealing for the person who is shortlisting there isn't. The third thing that you can do is that you can customize your skills according to the job description. Now, while doing so, please make sure that you are not lying about anything, because you have to be honest when applying for different positions. The fourth thing that you can do is that the matching skill sets that you have with regards to the job description or that organization. You should mention those at the very top.
So let's If that particular position requires you to do good public speaking, or if it requires you to be very good with numbers, or if you have good interpersonal skills, make sure that you are mentioning these at the very top. So when the person shortlisting goes through your resume, these are the first things that he or she notices. Then finally, the last point is that confirm your location. Let's assume that if you are applying for a position, and the location of that office is next to where you live, you will have a slight competitive advantage with regards to the commuting time over there. So keep that in mind and try to highlight these points and try to convey them appropriately when drafting your resume.
