As I've mentioned before in some of my lectures is that an interview is basically an experience. Whether it is good or bad entirely depends on you and the interviewer. Having said that, there is no guarantee that you will come across a good interviewer, but that should never undermine your chances to get that job. So you have to be fully prepared for the worst, and try to avoid all possible awkward moments that might arise during your interview. In this lecture, I will share with you 10 possible awkward moments and they are countermoves so you can use them if they are needed. moments of silence are not only awkward, but also potentially damaging towards an interview.
Remember, during an interview time is limited and you have to take advantage of every second available. And if you have moments of silence, you will be losing out on valuable time. So prepare your answers in advance and practice them so that you can share your answers in the least amount of time possible. This is very important because when you have a paid for an interview, you might be under permitted. less amount of stress and it is easy for you to forget important information during this phase. So do your homework and prepare for all possible questions.
And when you're delivering them try to deliver in the least amount of time possible, so that you avoid any possible moments of silence. As I mentioned earlier that avoiding eye contact will ruin your chances of giving a good interview, irrespective of age gap between you and the interviewer or anything else. maintaining eye contact is extremely important for you in order to give a confident answer. So when you are preparing before the interview, you must rehearse in front of your friends and family and you must also practice in front of the mirror so that you are able to maintain eye contact while giving your answers. This will help you a great deal during the interview. Then comes your handshake, which is the first contact that you will have with the interviewer and an extremely important step as far as building rapport with that interviewer is concerned, like they say that you can tell a lot by a person's handshake.
If it is weak, it will portray you as someone who is indifferent. With regards to that opportunity, and at the same time, if it is too long, the interviewer will find it odd and off putting. So keep it short and firm so that it portrays you as an ambitious candidate who has determined towards that job and ready to get down to business. The next point that I would like to share here is your adaptability to the modern age. Now in today's world, all organizations are moving towards a more digital environment. And if you are unaware of the latest trends and technologies that are being adopted, you might come across awkward moments that should be avoided.
So make sure that you are up to date with regards to what kind of technology that organization is using. And this is very relevant for those individuals who have applied for a job position which belongs to a different industry altogether. The next possible awkward moment could be that your interviewer is not familiar with your skill set. Now, like I said before, you will be extremely lucky if you come across a good interviewer. But you cannot ignore the fact that there are bad interviewers out there as well. But this cannot undermine your chances.
To get that job. Now we have a dedicated lecture on how to tackle with bad interviewers later in the course, which will be very beneficial with regards to this point. But in a nutshell, I would like to inform you that you need to improvise and work around the limitations of that interviewer. And while doing so, if you're a techie and the interviewer is not you must explain your answers in layman's term, so that he or she is able to understand them. This happens very regularly when you're faced with an HR interview, because in some circumstances, the HR rep will not be aware of the skillsets or the technical background that you have. So explain to them your answers in very basic layman terms.
So they are able to understand it and appreciate it rather than tagging you as a show of. Now sometimes you will come across interviewers who are a little too interested in knowing their candidates and during the interview, you will be asked certain personal questions with regards to your religion, your marital status, your age or your political opinions. I have discussed later how to deal with such situations. But very briefly, I would like to tell you that you should try to Avoid such questions in the first place, or maybe ask a counter question by saying how is this relevant to that job role? And then gently try to direct the conversation into a professional one, then comes giving very brief answers. Now, I have discussed this before as well that you should give an answer in a way that the interviewer has no follow up question in his or her mind.
And you can do this easily if you are applying the standard approach. But just to reinforce everything, please don't just say yes or no when giving a response to an answer, but try to follow up with a proper concrete justification of why you said yes or no in the first place. The next possible awkward moment could be your posture. Now when time is limited, your posture or your body language can speak volumes about a person. You may say one thing but your posture is reflecting something else. So make sure what you're saying is aligned with your overall body language and try to set up and lean forward while giving answers.
This will portray you as an energetic and an engaged candidate for that job application. After this comes another possible awkward moment, which is your outfit or what you are wearing. Keep in mind that you have to dress to impress not to distract. So wear appropriate decent clothes. And as a result, try to avoid all possible awkward moments that could arise because you are maybe overdressed or vice versa. Now that you will come across many individuals who say that fake it, fake it till you make it.
But this is something that is absolutely wrong, especially with regards to an interview, you have to ensure that you are being yourself during an interview. Because this is the easiest thing that you can do. If you're trying to fake it, or maybe pretending to be someone else. You can only do it for a certain period of time. And afterwards, the interviewer will one way or another be able to tell that you are not being yourself. So don't come up with a fake accent or stories that are not true.
Because if you tell one lie, you will have to follow it up with 10 more and honesty is something that you can never compromise on. So these are the 10 possible awkward moments that you can come across during an interview. I wanted to share these with you beforehand so you can prepare yourself accordingly so that you can avoid them during that critical phase of your interview and be mindful of what's happening around you. Every hurdle or awkward moment that you overcome will take you one step closer towards your destination.
