In this lesson we will be assembling and adding our front pocket to one of our main exterior pieces. So what you're going to need, you're going to need your front pocket pieces which is the exterior and lining piece. You're going to need one main exterior piece, some clips or pans. You're an ironing board, a ruler, a marking pin or your chalk roller, you're going to decide whether you're going to add hardware to the front so you'll either need your studs or rivets if you choose to use rivets and you're going to need your crap pliers. So let's get started. So now let's work with our front pocket.

You should have one of fabric and one of lining and you've already fused your interfacing. So what you're going to do you want to place them with right sides facing You're going to pin across the top edge. Right once you have it pinned, you're going to take it to the sewing machine and you're going to sew across the top age that you just pinned, and you're going to sew about a quarter of an inch away from the top. So you just going to take it and just solo it a quarter of an inch across the top, right, so you're going to sit down the edge of your front pocket about a quarter of an inch. All right, we're going to take this to the ironing board. Give it a good press, we'll go To turn it to the right side, and then we're going to tap stitches.

Now take your front pocket piece and open it up so that the wrong side is facing up. And what you're going to do, you're going to press this seam allowance open. Right. So once you press the same amount it's open. Now you can flip them so that the wrong sides are facing and use your fingers and kind of roll it together. Make sure it's nice and nice and the lining is not showing.

And now you can press this flat. Now that you have pressed this flap, take it to the sewing machine and top stitch down the top edge. Alright, so let's top stitch down the top edge of our front pocket and when you top stitch, you can increase your score. Actually, I usually increase mine to about three and a half. The highest link, which is a basting stitch is five. So I don't want to do five because I don't want the stitching to come out.

So I increased my stitch length to about 3.5. And I'm going to top stitch down this top image. Make sure that once you're done top stitching, you change your stitch length back to your regular length. You have some nice top stitching. All right, so let's work with our front pocket. Your front pocket is essentially going to have three pockets.

All right. So what we want to do We want to take a ruler. All right, so your piece should be about 16 inches long. So what you're going to do, I want to take my friction pen, I'm going to mark the center which is eight. Alright, so from a I'm going to mark make a mark f4 and I'm going to make a mark at toil. Alright, so eight is your center.

So this will be your center packet. So what you want to do, just take your ruler and at the four and 12 inch mark, just go ahead and draw a straight line all the way down. All right, so you've made a mark. You found your center which is a, you went over four inches to your left and then you went over four inches to your right and made marks. Alright, so now that we've drawn our lines out for our pockets, go ahead and grab one of your main pieces and you're going to line them up. The lining side is facing the right side of your front piece of your exterior piece.

So the lining is facing the front part of your exterior peace. And you're going to use clips or pans to clip this in place. And now what you're going to do, you're going to base the sides in place, and basting is you change your stitch to the longest stitch length on your machine, and you're going to base this in place. After you have the sides base in place, make sure you switch back to your regular stitch length. And you're going to stitch starting from the bottom all the way up for the line that you marked on your front pocket piece. So you're going to start from the bottom and so to the top of this line and also start at the bottom and so to the top for this line, right so let's base each edge of your front pocket together.

Change your stitch length to the longest stitch on your machine and you're going to sew about an eighth of an inch from the edge. Once you're done basing your sides now change back to your regular station and you're going to so both of the lines that you drew earlier this is creating the pockets on the front of your bed. All right, so now you have made your pockets on the front of your bag now is when you will decide whether you want to add hardware to the front of your bag. So if you're going to add hardware to your bag, we need to make a couple of marks. So from the top of your pocket on one of the lines that you made, you're going to measure down one inch, and whatever hardware that you're going to add, I'm just going to add four All right.

So we're going to make four marks. So I'm going to measure down from the top one inch and make a mark. From that mark, I'm going to go down another inch, make a mark and go down another inch. And one more. Right, so these marks will indicate where you need to install your hardware. And it's up to you.

You can do four you can do three, however you want to do it. And I may even do three because when we do the bottom of the bag, you want to make sure that your hardware isn't covered up. So, I'm going to change mine to three. All right, you want to do the same thing at the other line, measure down one inch, make a mark, one inch from that mark, make a mark and one inch from that mark, make a mark. Okay, so I'm going to show you an alternative to using rivets with rivets you have to have different tools in order to install them. So I want to show you an alternative to that, that you can use as hardware for your purse.

So you have stood and I'll give you a closer look at the stats. You can use the instead of rivets If you decide to put hardware on this purse, some studs come with two prongs and some come with four prongs. I have both but for the demonstration I'll be using the one that has the four prongs. So I've gone ahead and I've made my three marks. Remember we made marks at one inch, two inch and three inch. So now I'm going to take one of my studs and at the first one inch mark that we made, I'm just going to place it there and try to center it when you place it there and all you have to do is just press it through all layers of the fabric.

And be careful because you can stick yourself these are very sharp. Once you have it pulled through all layers of the fabric, you can use your hand you can use any hard surface. I am going to use Use the craft pliers and I'm just going to take those craft pliers and each prong I'm just going to fold it over. If you don't have craft pliers, any heart surface, you can just take it and just bend the prongs until you are satisfied with where they are. All right. So when you turn it over, you have installed your stood and when we get ready to put the entire purse together the stood We'll be within the lining so you don't have to worry about when you place your hand in your purse that the stud is going to stick you.

Alright, so that is a good alternative to using rivets. But if you have rivets and you have the hand tools or the press machine by all means, go ahead and use your rivets
