Now that we've got our metadata and keywords, and writing and ranking and all those sort of extra elements under control, we can really start to unleash some power. And the power I'm talking about is the library filter. So up the top here is the library filter. It's got three different things that can filter on text attributes, or metadata. Now, technically, it's all metadata, but Adobe choose to separate text and attribute just to give you a little more control. So what I'm going to do, I'm just going to start off with an example of text.

So this is basically you can search keywords, you can search file names, you can search anything you like. So if I was to click on text right there, you can see the last search I've done is straight. So it's right here on these kind of street portraits at the moment. If I was to change this to monks, then I'm going to get all these monk results and if I was to change this to Gowdy, then I'm gonna get all these Gaddy results. So this may seem like a little bit of overlap on the keyword list feature I just showed you a moment ago. But to be honest, I prefer to do my keyword searches up here in the library filter, I just find it a little bit easier than fishing through the keyword list looking for a particular keyword.

So this text is not limited to keywords, you'll see by default, it says any searchable field contains all of the following. So I could certainly do multiple keywords. Like if I was I could say flamenco and I could get all this result. And then I could say but just in Granada, I've missed, misspoke, Grenada should be I and now I just get my flamenco in the caves of Granada. So I can do multiple keyword searches. I can say any searchable field contains all or I could say doesn't contain contains none.

So classic database style control there. I can also say the take any searchable field or just keywords or maybe the caption or maybe the title, maybe the farm I'm so incredible power, how we can search for a particular string of text in a particular section. So that's searching on text, I'm just going to remove that. The next option is attributes. So attributes are stuff like, let's click none to get rid of that attributes and stuff like your writing stars or your color labels, or your flags. So all the stuff we looked at earlier on, so if I want to say Just give me all my five star images, I click there on five stars.

And that's all we've got. We've got 20 of my 1600 and 28 photos that meet the meet the standard to get five stars right there. If I say show me four and above, now we've got 150 images. If I say three and above, now we've got 490. So a lot of control there. I can by default, it says show me the number of stars and above but I can say you know rating is greater than or equal to writing is less than or equal to, or I can say writing is equal to if I do I wanted to just show me all my notes stars, and maybe considering deleting some of them or just checking that I haven't missed.

So you know, some good photos Originally, I can go back that way. So lots and lots of control there with the library filter in the attribute field. So again, I'm just going to click none to remove the filter again. But the really powerful one here is the metadata. So when I click on metadata, it takes me into this situation here. So you can see it's it's actually left on the last search I did from the keyword list.

Generally, by default, this top one is set to date. So I'm going to show you I can go into the date here, I can just very quickly and easily say 2008, maybe September, maybe the 23rd where were we and bang, we were in China, and we went to visit the great wall that day. What about the day before we were in Beijing, and we went to the Forbidden City so the date already saved with the file makes it very easy to hone in Let's look at 2013. Let's look at June. Let's look at Saturday, the eighth of June where were we I was in Bamberg, I was in Bamberg in Germany right there because they're the images that come up. So searching on date, very easy because the date is already contained in the image and saved by the camera so you don't need to enter that.

So data is good, but we'll stick on all dates for the moment. So moving along, look at all these other fields. I can search on camera, I can say show me everything from my good old d 100. Or everything from my day 200 everything from my brief time with the D 700. Or my much loved the 800 by Canon camera, so much more current images right there. Or I can look at all cameras right there.

I can isolate the lens. I can say show me all my photos from all cameras. Just from my 50 mil lens, my nice little 1.8 50 mil lens and what if I just wanted to see just the images on shot at F 1.8. I can See this next field here is labeled by default. But if I click there, I can actually change that to aperture, ISO flash GPS, whole bunch of stuff. So I'm going to say give me aperture.

And I'm going to say give me f 1.8. And I've got 51 images shot at F 1.8 on my 50 mil lens and I can just go into an impromptu slideshow at this point and have a cycle through and see lots of lovely shallow depth of field from my f 1.8 50 mil lens. So that's the power of the library filter across the top utilizing the metadata and all the beta keywords be at the camera data bit GPS data, just an endless range of details that Lightroom can just very quickly and easily search through. You can add more fields if I wanted to say add a column let's say I wanted a fifth column there. I want to see all dates all cameras 50 mil lens f 1.8 and I could say a particular ISO, just show me everything that I've shot with F 1.8 at 400.

ISO, for example, and it goes in and hits that, or maybe not go back to all speeds. Maybe I could say remove this column, and it's gone. So you can load that up with as many columns as you like to have all that search ability. And then once you're done, you click none, and you exit the search. Now another useful thing to know about the library filter. Firstly, if you are in loop mode, the library filter obviously doesn't show up because there's only one image there.

So you feel in the library wondering where your library filters gone, and you're in loop mode, then that's the situation right there. It's not going to be visible. So g for grid, I go back to grid, and there it is. Now, when I'm in my metadata search, if I'm doing a very long search with all these various criteria, the library filter itself can be quite invasive, coming down, taking up a large section of my screen, and certainly if I was Let's say you know, on a smaller screen a laptop or something, then I wouldn't be too welcome taking up all that space. So you can hit the backslash key up to the top right of the keyboard hit the backslash key, and that will actually hide the library filter, but it will keep the filtration present. So I'm still only seeing my 50 mil lens f 1.8 shots, but I'm hiding the filter.

So that's a wonderful thing to do consciously. But it's a problematic thing to do, unconsciously. And I'll show you what I mean if I exit the library filter. So now there's no filter applied. If I accidentally hit the backslash key, it's going to hide my library filter, as you can see, it's not there. So you might be going, Okay, I'm looking for my library filter.

Where is it? I want to do a filter, I can't find it, it's disappeared. So if your library filter has mysteriously disappeared, you just hit the backslash key and it should come back. So I hope you'll take the time to explore the library filter and I think it really makes the workflow very powerful with the ability to just find things so quickly and easily. It certainly negates the need to ever name files with the date or name folders with the date. Because the dates there already the cameras already saved it, and it's very easily searched on.

So the power of metadata in Lightroom is everywhere.
