In this video, we'll learn about some of the sources of an barriers to change. Kurt Lewin talked about drivers of change and resistors of change. And there is a symmetry because the same forces are at work in driving change, and also creating the barriers to change. So let's have a look at them. And I like to use a framework, which I call specters as a way of remembering a large number of sources and barriers to change. So what does Spectre stand for?

Well, the suspect is, stands for social or societal or sociological, social drivers for change of what's going on in society. And social drivers also can be barriers to change as well. P stands for political drivers or barriers to change. And don't forget that politics isn't something that just happens in Washington, or London, or Berlin, or Paris or Tokyo. Politics happens in every workplace. Whenever there are two or more people in a room, there's politics.

So don't just think capital P politics. Also think lowercase p politics. The first E stands for economics. These are the financial drivers for change, or the financial barriers to change. We can't afford it. And just as we thought about politics, having a capital P and a lowercase p, you can also think about macro economics.

So the world, the region, your nation, but you can also think of the economics of your organization, your business unit, your team C stands for The all important commercial drivers for change and also the commercial barriers to change. The need to keep our customers happy, can be both a driver for change and also a barrier to change when we're scared that making changes may upset some of our client group. And of course, don't forget in among the commercial drivers and barriers are, what our competitors are doing and what's happening up and down our supply chain. This is a huge one. Of course, as soon as we start thinking about supply chain in the modern world, we can't help but thinking about T for technology. And today, technology is one of the biggest drivers of change.

It's less a barrier to change unless you've got massive legacy systems on which you're dependent, which creates a fear of change. The R stands for regulation. You could equally Think of this as legislation, but regulation works better doesn't it with the acronym. There are of course, regulatory drivers for change whenever your nation or your region imposes new regulation, on your products, your services, your business operations you need to change. And some of the choices that you might want to make in designing change are of course going to be constrained by regulation and legislation. The second E of specters is perhaps not surprisingly, environment.

And just as with the economy, and politics, you can think uppercase E and lowercase e environment, you can think about the environment, the impacts of global climate change and other global trends in the environment. But we also need to think about the local environment within which your business or organization sets and indeed, the environment within which you and your colleagues work. And finally, the last s of specters stands for either safety or security. depending on the context of your organization, one of those will be a more appropriate word to use. But here we're thinking about, of course, health and safety at work. We're thinking about the safety of your customers and your clients and other people throughout your supply chain.

And we're also thinking about the security of your business, the security of your data, and the integrity of your data systems. Since this is a big one, specters of the future, the ghosts that inform the changes that we're going to make and show you the barriers you're likely to encounter. This is a great acronym to commit to memory. So this is anytime you get it out and use it to help identify what's driving changes. Therefore, identify the changes that are needed. The barriers we're likely to encounter.
