In this video, we're going to talk about how you know resistors. And we're going to do it in a way that tries to maintain harmony with the resistors. And the first one is to maintain your focus, to actually concentrate on what's important, and to keep a sense of who you are, and the organization you're representing. And the second one is to relax and I don't mean, who cares? What I mean by that is to not get uptight, not let the emotional content of the resistance affect your judgment. Recognize that resistance is going to happen, it's part of the process.

Resistors will resist. If there isn't resistance, then people don't care. So take that as a given and respond in a fluid and fluently The third is to project your personal power to avoid getting flustered and instead, stand your ground, not a confrontational standing your ground, but just allow yourself to kind of mentally fill the space. The exercise I like to do when I'm dealing with difficult situations is to imagine the bubble around me which we all have, which governs the distance the physical distance we prefer. In social interactions. I imagine that bubble expanding and expanding and expanding filling the room if necessary.

And that sense of projecting my personal power, staying upright of keeping a body posture which is symmetric and even and looking straight at the other person has a huge impact on the way you come across and therefore the effectiveness of your handling or resistance. The fourth technique is to use minimal effort. And by that what I'm really getting at, is using silence. In any dialogue between two people, the person who's most comfortable with silence, can readily gain the upper hand by using that. If someone is arguing against you, your best response initially, is silence. Because our need to fill a silence, because of our discomfort with it means that the other person will probably repeat some of what they've said, which will take some of the power out of what they've said.

They will be forced to listen to themselves, and therefore perhaps see any errors in their argument. If they've asked you a question, then silence sends a message to them that that was a good question. I need to think about it. Therefore, my answer will be a good one. If you respond immediately, what message Sending? I knew the answer straightaway.

It was an easy question. Therefore you're a bit silly. So silence is powerful. It creates a distance between you and the other person, but also shows a level of respect and a level of authority. The next technique is probably the one you're best prepared for through any professional training and formal education you've had in your life. It's to build an argument to find the one or two or at most three compelling reasons that will counter their resistance and to present them in a structured way and to support each with appropriate levels of evidence and reasoning.
