Using fear and desire as motivators for change, when you need to motivate someone to embrace change, perhaps the strongest motivator of all is fear. People will do almost anything if they fear something or if they feel losing something. So, in order to get people started, give them a bit of a push along the journey of change. Fear can be an appropriate motivator to use, these are the consequences of not changing. So we look at the drivers for change. And we look at the consequences of not changing and we can use fear.
However, fear is a dangerous motivator to us. It can be used and scrupulously, it can be used in appropriately, it can be used without integrity. So once you've got got people moving, even if you need to use fear to get them started, you should switch and stop using fear as a motivator and start having a pull tight motivator around desire. Paint a compelling picture of the future that people can look forward to, so that they've got something to want to desire that will draw them on, and it will be a much more sustainable motivator. It's a lot less exhausting to pursue a goal out of desire that is to flee our present situation.
