DESCRIPTION: Marcel goes into detail, demonstrating the proximity effect with various mics and what choices one is faced within a recording situation.

Comparing the Omni Schoeps CMC6 mic with MK2 capsule and the cardioid Neumann KM184, Marcel demonstrates the proximity effect and how it can change the timbre of the guitar, so whilst you can still achieve a great recording with a cardioid mic, it’s worth bearing in mind that your mic position will probably be different to when using an Omni. He also uses an SM57 to prove the point and an AKG414 to show how the proximity effect works on larger diaphragm mics too – and points out the 414, while a fantastic mic, is not a true Omni when switched into Omni mode, so it doesn’t escape the proximity effect.
