Defined Ransomware is a form of malicious software (malware) that encrypts the victim’s files and prevents access to these e-documents. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a division of the United States Department of Homeland Security, ransomware is “designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid”
Ransomware is typically spread through employees opening phishing emails (messages trying to "fish" for personal or financial information) or by an employee unknowingly visiting an infected website. Once the email or link is accessed, the ransomware automatically installs itself on the victim’s computer system giving the cybercriminal access to data and systems.
