Let's talk about the definition of this idiom. Whoo. First, we're going to talk about the literal meaning. The literal meaning is the word definitions what the words mean just as we look at them. So if you break up with someone, it means you break apart and you do it with someone else. A break up, if you just look at the words all by themselves, it means to come apart.

So there are pieces which come apart. In the pictures, we can see there's a person sitting at Tom and you have bread, and the pieces are flying away, right? They're coming apart, they're breaking up. So if you break up with someone, and we're talking about the literal meaning, it means you are next to someone else with someone and you break apart. You come apart, pieces of your body apart. So that's the literal meaning but what All idioms there's a second meaning right?

There's a hidden meaning. That's called the figurative meaning. So let's see what breakup with someone means. Hmm, pictures. I love pictures. Okay, so we have a picture with a broken heart.

And it says game over. Here we have a picture it says goodbye, a broken heart. And it looks like people are using their phones to text maybe to communicate. Goodbye, it's over. See this picture here, behind the big red. Cancel sign.

There's a couple in there kissing. They're lovely and they're happy together, but no. Break up. So break up with someone means no longer be in a romantic relationship with them. It's game over for that relationship. No more.

It's done. Let's do similar. And opposite expressions for break up with someone. Let's do the similar ones first. I'm going to show you them in a moment. And I'm going to say each one and pause so you can improve your pronunciation and repeat after me.

Here we go. The first one, don't put someone in the relationship split up with someone. Drop someone like a hot potato. These are all similar expressions to break up with someone. So the first one dump someone. It just means like you have a bucket of water and you dump the water out, right?

You're like you're dumping the relationship. out, poof, it's gone. So if you don't have someone you break up with them, you're no longer in a romantic relationship with them. And relationship is pretty straightforward. I think it's easy to understand. It's similar to break up with someone.

And when we're talking about this relationship, we're not talking about a relationship between coworkers, or maybe good friends or a parent and a kid or cousin something like that. Nope. We were talking about a romantic relationship with love and stuff. But now it's ending. And relationship is another way to say break up with someone split up with someone. Hmm.

If something's splits, or something splits up. Let's say you have something like this. And it splits. It breaks apart. It comes apart. It's splits it divides, right.

So if use split up with Someone before you were a couple, you were together, you're happy. Now you split up and you go apart. You're no longer together, you're apart. You split up with someone, you break up with someone. The last one is another idiom. I like this one.

Okay, so I think we know what a potato is, right? It's a vegetable, you can eat it, right? Drop someone like a hot potato. So imagine you have a potato, and it's just been in the oven for a while, and it's hot. So if you pick it up, you're probably not going to hold on to it for very long, you're going to drop it. So this idiom is used to mean break up with someone.

So you drop someone like a hot potato. And more specifically, this is like an immediate enter the relationship. So maybe one person they think, oh, everything's good, and also the other one who has They're gone. They dropped you like a hot potato. It's a it's over, it's done. Okay, so these were similar expressions to break up with someone.

Let's do opposite expressions. So all of these over here in red will have an opposite meaning to break up with someone. Repeat after me. Begin a romantic relationship with someone. start dating someone. start seeing someone.

Okay, once again, all of these in red, they have an opposite meaning to break up with someone. So the first one is the longest. And this probably the easiest to understand. Begin a romantic relationship with someone, right? So it's not a word. relationship.

It's not a friendship relationship. It's a romantic relationship. So if we begin a romantic relationship, it's starting right? relationship is nice. And you're together, right? So it's the opposite of breakup with someone breakup is separate and begin a romantic relationship is to come together.

All right? start dating someone. Right? So dating is having a romantic relationship with someone. If you go on dates, you go to the movie, you go on beautiful walks on the beach, you're dating, you're in a romantic relationship. So if you start dating someone, oh, that's the opposite of breakup with someone.

Start seeing someone seen is a similar way to say dating. And it's a romantic kind of relationship. It doesn't mean I see you, as in I'm looking at you know, that kind of is creepy. start seeing someone means to start dating them to start having a romantic relationship with them. Okay, so these are similar and opposite expressions to break up with someone. We just did definition.

Okay, let's move forward
