A hook punch may be defended using a preemptive eye strike to stop the assailant in his tracks. An eye stroke is one of the quickest and most potent krav maga upper body combatives. An eye strike short-circuits the para-sympathetic nervous system to generally stop the body from following through with whatever action was set in motion. To enable the defense:

use correct finger positioning (a claw) so that when the fingers hit the face/skull, they collapse in their natural articulation.
tuck your chin as you execute the strike
follow-up immediately with additional combatives as necessary.
