Fad diets and superfoods. My biggest problem with them with a lot of them is just some of the complete lack of logic. It sounds really good until you start to dissect it. The keto diet and the Paleo diet. Our ancestors were horrible hunters. They didn't have guns, they probably didn't even have spears.

We we we back then we ever tried to catch a moose. And I don't want to get anywhere near one of those things. I'll try and take it down and feed it to a tribe. Farming was what made us survive. It's also what started communities and all that fun stuff. wheat crops allowed us to exist as human beings.

Crash diets give us results. Absolutely. Any crash diet is absolutely going to give you results. You're going to lose weight anytime you switch diets. However, they're not sustainable for a multitude of reasons that I'm not going to go into. So why would you even bother?

Just find something that works for you? Stop the credit diet because they don't work and eat good food. You cannot sustain the health through dialogue exercises imperative which we went through last week, just 15 minute walk per day. fad diet pros, there is some good stuff in them. They do eliminate refined sugars refined or processed carbohydrates, or they limit portion control of certain high calorie foods, some most of them, not all of them. So they're good in that aspect.

We all agree that that we should lessen those things. And that's pretty much where the argument ends. How do they get so popular if they're not sustainable, clever marketing, lots and lots of clever marketing and I'm going to go over clever marketing scams at some point, you'll see some research that's twisted around who gets fat eating sweet potatoes means they'll tell you not to eat those things it's just crazy. Is there like an overload of lentils running around that I don't know about that's making people overweight? I don't think so. Those are not the foods that we need to avoid.

Here's just a quick, quick summary of them. A plant based diet versus a paleo diet, the Paleo diets no grains, like bread pizza pasta, sad. corn, rice tortillas, pita bread popcorns no lagoons, no hummus beans or peanuts, beans and peanuts are logos, and no root vegetables. Those are the things that are off limits. They can also have non starchy vegetables, eggs, meat, fish, chicken pork, whereas obviously, the plant based diet you can't have that stuff. Another dietary snafu Where are you getting fiber in this?

Where's the fiber coming from in this this pyramid and they went back to the food pyramid which is just a big no no in the first place. You're getting some from the berries here allowed to have nuts and seeds sparingly lots of oils. No and then the basis of it is meat, eggs, dairy, you can have some green vegetables and some non green vegetables. And then you exclude bread pasta, sugar, milk, corn, beans and rice. Okay. Okay.

Gluten Free soy free and what the, you know what that is? So what are those mean? Those sometimes when you go out to restaurants you'll see a V on there an FF or an NF or a gf or NSF. Those are so people that have dietary restrictions can figure out what they can and can't have. So that's gluten free soy free. Nf means not free because a lot of people have peanut allergies cashew allergies, almond allergies, pistachios you name it, or FF which is fat free.

The auto menu means vegetarian. or vegan depends on the restaurant itself. Some use it interchangeably some don't. Is it a factor of fact that humans aren't meant to eat grains and the soy causes cancer? Let's discuss elimination diets first and a word of caution. So elimination diets anybody here ever done one?

Aren't they fun? How long did yours last? It's still one thing. I tried to reintroduce foods and they're just fell. Yeah. So elimination diets usually what happens in most elimination diets, you're eliminating the seven major allergens, which most people have a problem which most people who have allergens have a problem with.

What you do is you slowly introduce them back into your diet. So if it's okay to have gluten, great to slowly add it back in Can you have shellfish then you slowly add that back in? Can you have eggs? Nope. Okay, we're not going to reintroduce That one in. The problem is when you do an elimination diet for an extended period of time you lose the ability to digest that food.

I haven't eaten meat over 24 years. I did this once before, this 24 years. When I went back to eating it, it's like getting food poisoning. Why I went back to it after that, I don't know. It's like food poisoning. So a similar type of thing will happen because I just don't have the enzymes anymore to digest it.

Like I can't digest it anymore. The same thing happens when people stop eating eggs and milk and stuff like that. So gluten free if you see that, that gf on it means gluten is not in it. We may not be in it. Hopefully not either one of them. There was a cute little movie.

The guy was on a cleanse. Someone said, Oh, what can't you have? I can't have gluten. It was like an elimination thing. You You don't even know what gluten is. calories are gluten.

That is gluten. Because that, unfortunately in the mainstream of society, that's kind of what we think about food. We just think it's anything that's bad for you. It's gotta be gluten. I actually heard people in the grocery store having a discussion like this. This was actually from a movie but I found the conversation in the grocery store.

Sad but funny, because it just backs that up. So gluten so that we all understand because it is tricky. It's a protein in wheat that makes bread stretchy. It's also what makes ctm so MIDI. See tan is a vegetarian food that a lot of the mock meats are made out of so you can take flour, rinse it in a lot of water, and then eventually after enough rinsing, you end up with this really stretchy ball. I just suggest you buy a box of vital wheat gluten if you want to do that.

It makes it so much easier. someone's already washed it and done whatever they needed to do. weed free and gluten free. Free. They're not the same thing. There is a difference.

So sometimes you'll see something that says wheat free and gluten free. Some wheat contains less gluten than others and it's easier for some people to digest. rye is one of them. Barley is another. Some people don't have a problem with barley. It has less gluten in it to Kaylee is another one.

Ancient weeds are known as heirlooms, and they did contain less gluten. Sometimes you'll see the big claim that Oh, there's more gluten in our food today. That's true. There is more gluten in wheat than ever used to be if you want to avoid that. It's very simple. You just have either einkorn Emmer, which is also known as farro, which is delicious, by the way, spelt to Kaylee which is a wheat rye hybrid and Kambou which is known as buckwheat.

Freaka is a young green wheat that is also absolutely delicious. You can usually find them in that weird healthy aisle and they're really Good for you. Obviously, don't do it if you're on an elimination diet, eliminating gluten, do try gluten free grains for their nutritional value not because someone like on Facebook told you to do it. But just because there are really good foods out there. millet is really tasty. It's not just a pretty planet that he put off in the fall.

It's delicious. It is a really tiny, tiny grain. It's not just it's actually in Berkeley, too. If you ever look in Berkeley, and you see that tiny little speck of yellow or what's white, technically, that's melon, you could actually cook it, add water, eat it. Don't do it with the bird feeder. Do not again, avoid gluten because of faulty claims that we weren't meant to eat and all that fun stuff.

We've eaten it successfully for 8000 years. There's other stuff out there that causes maybe gluten sensitivities and things like that, but it's not just the gluten itself. Again, we've we've turned this one thing into something evil There is absolutely no scientific study that has linked gluten to any disease or condition despite what people will tell you. that excludes celiac obviously. dairy free, is it a factor of fat, fat and the fact is dairy is hard to digest. Regardless.

If it's in springtime, your intestinal tract does have extra you know nutrients I mean, extra probiotics in there that will actually help digest the milk. Any other time of the year it gets a little tricky. You can also add spices to it that will help with the digestion of it yeah ginger to it, it will add a little heat to your body and make it digest a little easier. Hard cheeses are the hardest to digest. They're salty, oily, heavy, there's just no getting around that the best forms of dairy if you are going to eat it are pasture raised, grass fed organic, they have more nutrients and then also plain unsweetened yogurt or keefer as As well as ghee and softer cheeses, such as their opinion here is dairy in your DNA. Some people can digest it better than others.

If you have, if you know people that are of African descent or Asian, they are typically lactose intolerant, it's just something that's in their genetic makeup. It's just an How many times do you see Japanese people eating like pizza? It just didn't happen. Milk does a body good or does it? It has the wrong fat to protein ratio for human children. Parents are often advised not to give an infant cow's milk until they're at least a year old.

I would question why you would ever do it. If you're told not to do it until then, the phosphorus in milk is known to Leach calcium from the bones. So you remember earlier we were talking about how confusing minerals and vitamins are and how one supplement can kind of steal another one. That's a good example of it. It actually leeches calcium from your bones. The phosphorus also inhibits the absorption of manganese caesium, zinc and copper.

Last time I checked, we can't really these are all trace minerals. We can't afford to not have them in abundant supply. The casein and dairy binds up iron includes and can also lead some deficiencies. So if you're going to keep adjusting it, then please do the grass fed the pasture raised find a farm that that's good with. There's soy Is it a cancer a cure every day. It's one of those two things, it causes cancer or it cares.

I can promise you that more people have died by alcohol consumption than anyone's ever died from eating a soybean. It's a matter of fact, nobody's ever died from actually eating a soybean. There's no research that ever indicated that. However, if you're going to buy soy, please make sure that it is organic, non GMO. It is one of those crops that is highly highly genetically modified because it's usually used for food for livestock or as a filler. Soy contains isoh flavonoids that protect us from specific forms of cancer including reproductive cancer, you won't hear that they'll tell you it'll cause that I have patients that have reproductive cancers and could not have soy in their diet, so I didn't give it to them.

Sorry, however, prevents fat accumulation alleviates menopause related issues and may reduce the onset of puberty as well as menopause. It reduces rates of bone fractures, unlike milk and those Phyto estrogens that everybody tells you about that are in soy. They're also in lavender and rosemary essential oils as long as there's a lot of other things. So they're everywhere, but nobody's telling you not to sniff lavender essential oil, but you can stop eating the soul doesn't make sense. superfoods? Again, every day there's a new superfood out there.

There's this food's good for you. This one's really good for you and this one is a superfood. So superfoods are these amazing foods that have so many compounds. I don't know how you're living if you don't ingest this every single day to our off site Ebola is a big thing here. Anyone heard about it? Thank God.

So this is like some trends that really popular about these outside evils outside he is a superfood. It's this amazing berry like goji berries and MonaVie which was some weird, it came in like a wine bottle so that you felt like you were really special. And it was made of like all these tropical exotic fruits and berries and you had that and it was amazing. You had a little tiny shot of it every day and the bottle costs like 40 $50 which is why you would only want to drink about a shot of that. So and then you have the green of the week. Well there are a lot of problems with superfoods that I won't go into here because I just don't have time.

However, we have lots of true superfoods here in our backyard of America without having to source them from Some other country and steal their food. So we have dark leafy greens they grow here. All other green vegetables they grow here, these are all and these are actually in order of nutrient density to mushrooms, beets, bell peppers, onions, garlic, all these foods, fruits, especially berries. Eating a quarter cup of berries every day can reduce your brain age by two years. Good with beans, raw nuts, seeds, colorful starchy vegetables and whole grains and potatoes. All of those are superfoods.

They're not labeled superfoods, they're just super foods for you to have because of their nutrient profile. All like a saccharide. Sometimes you'll hear like this anti bean thing that all like a saccharides this big, long word there are really bad for you. It's a non digestible fiber and beans. And that's what they'll tell you. It's horrible.

It's non digestible, so you shouldn't eat beans because you shouldn't have that. It's very important. It's actually free. It's purposely which we'll get into with digestion. It's purposely non digestible. So and there's also something called lectins that are and they tell you the lectins are poisonous and you shouldn't eat beans because lectins are poisonous and they're gonna kill you.

I'm not exaggerating I have actually read these things are actually removed in the cooking process when their pressure coats any can be seen here in America is pressure cooked therefore any can being in the store anytime you pressure cook beans, the lectins are gone. It removes them, so they're safe to eat. So an alternative to all the fats. This is iron VEDA, which is one of those Eastern medicines and philosophies that I talked about last week, where I kind of follow those along with Western medicine and combine them. Our VEDA literally translates to the science of life or life science. It's the sister science to yoga and has been practice for over 5000 years in India recognizes everyone as an individual as being just that even twins that are born in the same family have different constitutions.

It's focused on creating balance based on you specifically as a human being based on a bunch of different factors. It gets very complicated, but it doesn't necessarily have to be, you can just take the stance of Okay, I'm a fiery person, summers a fiery season, so in order to keep myself from getting really fiery, I should avoid fiery foods. It can be that simple, but doesn't have to be Oh, I'm gonna wear red today because it's Monday and the moment you are an individual, which is what I'm trying to express during this whole series. As such, it's important to question what you read research and do what works for you. So you do your research. Okay, that works for me, but that doesn't and then incorporate it and make it your own.

Always remember to be flexible and compassionate with yourself. We all fall off the wagon again. It's progress, not perfection. Just get back on the wagon. Honor your individuality. Eat with attention and intention, not distractions.

Listen to the subtle cues your body is sending with every meal avoid and acids. Pain is a signal. There's a reason why our body feels pain. It lets us know that something is wrong. inflammation is the same thing. Inflammation causes pain, inflammation and heartburn are alerting us to make changes.

It's saying hey, you know what, that food doesn't feel real good. You should probably not eat that again. Taking an anti acid doesn't fix that. It just kind of coats it all really nicely. It also dilutes digestive juices that are there to fight bacteria so it can actually be harmful. Use lots of herbs and spices or reduce or eliminate salt in Take IRA is extremely concerned with herbs and spices and how they are used in food.

So is Chinese medicine
