Inhale gently through your nose to a mental count of 4


Hold your breath in for a count of 7


Exhale slowly through your mouth&ndash; around your tongue&ndash;for a count of 8


What to watch for
Before we practice, I need to mention one important thing: don&rsquo;t be surprised if it takes you several attempts before you can follow the ratio of inhaling 4, holding seven, and exhaling eight comfortably. Work your way up to it. If your body needs to inhale past four, do so. The last thing you want to do is to add more anxiety by rigidly adhering to the ratio. The calming effect is more important than getting it right.
Note that you always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth.
The absolute time you spend on each phase is not important but the ratio of 4:7:8 is&ndash; exhalation is twice as long as inhalation. If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8.
