Well welcome once again students to the course, how to nail the teacher interview. Thank you again for enrolling in the course I hope you are enjoying and getting some valuable content. In this course again, my whole point in creating this has been able to help you nail the teacher interview and become that teacher and change your life. And not only that change the lives of the students who are lucky enough to be enrolled in your classroom. So, in this lesson, I want to talk about a very important question that I make sure I always ask when I when I interview candidates, and that is, what is your plan to help or to save the failing student? You're going to have those students who for one reason or another are not being successful.

What plan Do you have, what plan Do you have and so this is what I want to try and help You answer when you get those questions in the interview. So in some form or another, there will be that question it's going to ask you, what are you going to do? If you notice that a student is failing your class to me? If you know me, and if you read my blog, you know that I have always said that if a student fails my class, it is not the students fault. It's my fault, right? The student did not pass my class because I did not give the student support he or she needed to be successful.

That's just the way I believe, you know, I know many teachers would say, you know, the student earned his app for others will quote the same. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I don't follow those philosophies. You know, if the teacher who says you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. I say it's time to make the water taste better. Okay?

We have that opportunity in our classes to be able to change the taste of that water right. I believe that Can't put the education of a 13 year old in the hands of a 13 year old is the teacher's responsibility to find a way to get that student to be successful? If a student fails the class, it's because the teacher failed the student saying that in the interview, I dare you. So, if you're asked about your plan to save the failing student here is how I suggest you answer number one. Update your grades, often so you can identify the struggling students early students will dig themselves into a hole pretty quickly if you let them. If you update your grades on a weekly basis, at the most two weeks, you can make a list of students who are falling behind before it's too late to save their grade number to have one on one conversation with the identified students about their grades.

Let them know that you're concerned about their success in your class, find out what it is that's keeping them from getting better grades, sometimes you'll find it could be that they just don't have a quiet place at home to do the homework. It might be that they didn't understand the assignment and were too shy to ask make it clear to them that you are sincerely interested in them and that you believe in their ability to be successful. You might be the first teacher who has ever believed in them. Number three, be willing to spend extra time to help students succeed mentioned that an interview mentioned that you are willing to stay after school for some extra tutoring time or even open up your classroom at length to help the struggling students. I know teacher to make students come in at lunch to finish her homework so they get the credit.

For students, it's a consequence, but it's really an opportunity for the teacher to keep the students from falling further behind. I admire teachers who are willing to give up their personal time to help kids mentioned that in the interview. Number four, get parents involved. Most parents want to be involved with their child's education. They want their son or daughter to get good grades. The last thing you want to do is surprise a parent with an F on the report card.

I don't know how many times As a school administrator, I've received phone calls by upset parents who received their child's bad report got asking me why the teacher never informed them that their kid was failing. Those were tough conversation because I didn't have an adequate answer. Although a teacher is only required to send out one warning that a student is in danger of failing by mail, a successful teacher recognizes the importance of keeping the parents involved and will make parent contact frequently for those students who are not being successful. There should be no surprises when the grades come out. Number five, accept late work. I know some will argue that when you accept late work, you're not teaching the student responsibility.

I understand that side of the debate. I've always argued, however, that if a student digs himself into a homework hole, and he or she sees that there's no way out, he or she will just give up, give up on your class on school on life. There always has to be a way to keep the lights on. Here's what I mean. If we As adults who don't pay our light bill, we get our electricity cut off, right? Does it get cut off forever?

Do we have to start stocking up on candles Of course not, we pay a penalty and the electric company turns our power back on. It's the same for students, when they don't turn in their work on time, and we don't accept that late It's like cutting off their hope for a good grade in your class. This is like turning off their lights for ever. As a teacher, I would take off some point to the penalty, but accept their work and keep their chances of getting good grades possible. keep the lights on, feel free to use that example in your interview. The main point here is to demonstrate to the interview panel that you are willing to do whatever is necessary to make sure that the students pass your class and that you see their success as your responsibility, not theirs.

Let them see that you are taking on the responsibility of the education of your kids and that you are in partnership with their parents to help each student be successful, even the ones who don't want to learn. So a good question you might get it What would you do if you discovered that one of your students was failing your class? How would you answer that? I think now you have some ideas on how to successfully answer that question. All right. So that's the end of this session, guys.

I hope you found it valuable. Hang in there. We're almost finished. I'll see you in the next class.
